What I Love About My Small Home:
I love how we have grown from an engaged couple to a family of four in this apartment. I love how I can hear anything from anywhere in the apartment, so there has never been a need for things like a baby monitor. I love how many windows we have and how beautiful the light streaming in is throughout the day. I love our vintage hardwood floors. I love how we are walking distance to a very fun part of our neighborhood. I love how, despite the "smallness" I have always managed to find ways to make it work for us.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
• Utilize vertical space. Not only do tall bookcases, high wall shelves, and wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling units add visual interest, but they also provide much needed storage in a small living situation. This can force you to use the space inside of a room instead of lining all of your furniture along a wall. It allows you to collect visual clutter in select spaces, leaving other spaces to be more open and clear with room to breathe.
• Edit, edit, edit. For the most part, you don't need more than one of a single type of item. Try not to hold on to too many things for future use. Don't let stuff rule your life.
• Don't be afraid to let go of (preferably by way of selling) furniture that is not working for a room. When we first moved in we used a round table that sat four in our breakfast nook. I realized the space would be MUCH better utilized if we did a booth like set up. Now we can sit at least 6 comfortably and the benches serve as extra storage!
