If architect Jim Poteet looks like he knows what he's doing when it comes to tiny spaces, it's because he does: you might remember him from his designs of a Modular Guest House and its modern tastes, tight but efficient quarters and super cool colors. Well he's done it again, only this time in a small garage apartment in Texas that he and his wife share. What Jim had to say about the project that was completed in 2009:
This was a 700 square foot garage apartment for my wife and myself adjacent to a ranch house in the river community of Hunt [Texas] that my family had purchased years earlier. They needed a place to protect their cars in the event of hail (as well as a place to play ping pong!) and my Dad needed a shop for his woodworking projects. My wife and I elected to add a half story to this garage as a get-away for ourselves.
This was also the first time I have had the time to design for my wife and myself. Our 14-year-old office has been so consistently busy that I hadn't had the opportunity to do that (we live in a 100-year-old cottage). The exterior had to build on the Hill Country vernacular that was there, but in the interior I could experiment with things I was interested in—like small open living spaces and tiny kitchens.
I am a big fan of current Scandinavian interiors which are very casual, very minimal, and our office's work has been described as minimalist. That direction was filtered through the influence of the light and beauty of the Hill Country itself.
Thanks Jim!

Shaw's Original Fir...
impressive. the house is simple, but not boring.
What a beautiful home. I love how the decor is equally gorgeous and livable ;) Great job!
Love everything about this! Really well designed and decorated. A big gold star from me!
what is the paint color?
I also love everything about this place. The bedroom with the throw blanket and matching rug made me swoon!
Hi, graciaann. It's Jim here. The interior color is Pittsburgh "gypsum." It's been our go-to white for years.
Thanks to all for your kind words!
WOW! I love this place. It's beautiful and so simple... I love the entry way.
Source for everything??
I am absolutely smitten by the sofa. One day a time will come when I can get something non-microfiber and not worry that it will be destroyed.
I love Hunt! What a great getaway and a great use of space.
I'm a fan. This is my favorite space in a very long time. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah! Source for everything : ) Pillows, rugs. The cabinets are gorgeous, I love them. Your style is just perfect.
so this isn't your full-time home? just a 'bonus space'? so jealous!
That's one beautiful garage. The inside is decorated perfectly as well.
Jim Poteet is my favorite architect operating in the U.S. today. He's done so many great projects and I look forward to seeing the next one. The Hunt apartment is perfect!
Clean, light, practical , I love it!
Wow, what a wonderful kitchen! The grey and orange are perfect. Where are the cupboards from?
Any help where I can find this pillows? Exactly what I am looking for to pull together my grey couch and orange ottoman,
Terrific use of color throughout!
I love this so much. If I could have my house look like this I think I would die happy. Amazing work!
I WANT THOSE COUCHES! They're simply gorgeous. Where did you get them?
Soooooo cool! I am working toward this look at home. Maybe I can come close to this level of awesome.
I never, ever, in a million years, would have chosen these colors, but I cannot stop looking at them!
How did you choose them? What was your starting point?
I agree about the matching throw/rug. Swoon!
Is that an outdoor shower? I can't tell. You've done an incredible job on the space. Wow.
Fabulous! Where did you find that beautiful orange, pink, green and mustard rug?
First, thanks again for all the kind comments. It makes us feel great. Cabinets are custom made here in SA by my friend Nick. Daybeds were a lucky thrift shop find. The bright rug was a gift, not sure of its origins. The other rugs and throw are Dash+Albert. The pillows are Judy Ross Textiles--I think I first saw them on AT. Yes, there is an outdoor shower under the tower.
Best to all, J
I love the grey and orange combo. The blue cloud wall hanging is also just lovely and whimsical. Very modern but playful, a color box.
Where did you get the red heart Chuck poster? That's my husband's name and I'd love to get one. It's so cool.
SUPER CUTE!!
@mnp403 .. that (chuck heart) looks more like a canvas that was painted, but if you have a staples or kinkos nearby.. and ill make up a heart design similar for you and you can print it.. just message me.. with email or something
Wonderful. One of my favourite tours to date. Thanks for sharing.
mnp:
the chuck poster is a tribute to Chuck Ramirez a beloved local artist here in SA who died unexpectedly late last year. On the night of his memorial, my friend local artist Cruz Ortiz put these posters up all over our neighborhood. they were understandably never for sale.
check out cruzortiz.com for more of his incredible work and ruizhealyart.com for chuck's.
Thanks! I will check out those sites. What a great tribute.
