Name: Jody Curtin and Joe Wilmot
Location: Marina Del Rey — Los Angeles, California
Size: 650 square feet
Years lived in: 6 — Rent
Jody Curtin and Joe Wilmot have a compactly-sized Marina Del Rey condo that offers a fresh take on a traditional rental. With the help of Natalie Younger they were able to design their ideal home with a fresh and cool palette that celebrates the best of beach living.
This one bedroom condo sits a few miles from the beach and has a calming freshness about it. Jody and Joe chose cool tones of blues, sages, and whites that really bring a relaxing vibe to each room.
Natalie, the designer, explained that one of Jody's requests was to have a clean and clutter-free home; one that was adaptable for her son, who lives with her part time. There is plenty of shelving and storage for all the books and toys. Another wonderful feature that they were able to implement pretty nicely into the small space was a home office for Jody's business.
Living in Los Angeles has had its influence on their personal style. "We like stylish things," Jody explains, but insists that " usefulness and unpretentiousness" are essential. "We both like clean, modern, and minimalistic spaces." Anyone who can accomplish these key elements in their home environment will easily find what makes them most happy. In Jody and Joe's case, they felt that their bed, where they enjoy all their down time and doing "the husband and wife thing," was the most significant thing in their home.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Cozy Contemporary
Favorite Element: The white credenza and the dining room table
Biggest Challenge: Making a designless space look designed
What Friends Say: "holy s***!"
Biggest Embarrassment: The cottage cheese ceiling
Biggest Indulgence: Living room sofa. It's so comfy; its cushions are feather/down over memory foam.
Best Advice: Got this from Apartment Therapy book: It's okay to put some money into your place even if it's a rental. It's your home so you might as well enjoy where you live. It's so true. So we replaced the ugly carpeting with a nice berber at our expense and, wow, this place is a stylish little oasis of chill (just don't look up and notice the cottage cheese).

White Enamel Flatwa...
Wow, how nice and relaxing. Reminds me of a home I might find in SB...guess the calm, beachyness of it reminds me of here. It also looks a bit like a West Elm catalog (Very nicely styled, that is)
love that coffee table - any idea where it is from?
Never mind - all I had to do was read...
So serene. Well done!
One of my favorite tours! It proves that a great place really doesn't need to be huge, it just has to be done tastefully.
@trixielich, it says coffee table is from West Elm. =)
To be sure it is nice and calming, but all the designs are right out of a Westelm catalog. I like a good mix of furniture, not something that looks like a set.
I'd love a close up of the drawer pulls on the white chest.
And yay for people making their house a home whether they own or rent!
this space is so clean and organized, love the soothing palette - beautifully photographed.
I could most certainly unwind and chill here! Well done. Great color palette.
Doing the husband and wife thing? Too much information! Finish this sentence: "If that's the focal point I hope..."
Nice color choices, though.
Such a peacefulness captured- the color choices are perfect! Good choice on the furniture pieces, they complement the rooms very nicely and add interest to such a simple space. I have to get some of those tri-pod lamps! I love them!
I had a feeling that someone would make a comment about the preponderance of furniture from less than a handful of stores, and I was right. But I must say, that kind of thing really doesn't bother me. If you find a store or two that perfectly reflects your aesthetic, then I say, do what you want! Personally I love this house tour. It's serene and lovely and very nicely put together.
I love the round table in the dinning room. It is for me very vintage, elegant and so so very sophisticated.
nice... I like the color
I love all the paint colours, and the coffee table is beautiful!
Nice, well-coordinated colors give a clean, beachy feel. Beautiful dining room and kitchen floor. Love the handles on the white dresser - are they little velvet ropes? Source?
Great tour! I totally agree with the sentiment that it's okay to invest a little bit of money on upgrades even if it's a rental. I had my interior professionally painted and that one small change dramatically improved my place. I'm sure you enjoy your carpet upgrade immensely!
The bed is the most significant thing to them? It so does not look significant. The rest of the house is really nice. I expected more from the significant bed though.
Very calm and clean and peaceful. Love it. Love the colors. Gotta get me some gray.
I expected a fabulous bed :( I do love the colors though.
very peaceful. would have liked to have seen the bathroom.
Really pretty, I love modern & contemporary styles but always find it difficult to make it still look warm and cozy... this pulls it off perfectly.
This is so pretty--sleek and neat, but soft and warm, too, with lots of fabrics. I like the wall colors.
I loved your home, it sure didn't feel like a typical MDR condo.
I also loved that you mentioned P.S. as part of your inspiration, as I live here and find inspiration all over the place.
Thanks for sharing!!
Myra
I also agree that putting a little money into a rental is good. Why not enjoy it since you are living there. Great job.
Gorgeous. Relaxing, Homey, romantic without being too girl-y, i would move in in a heartbeat!
Jody and Joe...Didn't even notice the ceiling until you mentioned it...the cuteness takes you away...
love the choice of colors
