Name: Jody
Location: Woodside, Queens, NY
When my friend, designer Elizabeth Holmes, trusted my taste to style a photo shoot of one of her cool kitchens, I found the confidence to share my eclectic apartment with Apartment Therapy. I asked her photographer, Yijun Liao, to work with me and highlight some of the unique juxtapositions.
Like my found object art, my apartment is a composition of furnishings from baroque to primitive, of rich colors and textures, comfort and whimsy.
My husband and I bought this 2 bedroom co-op in Queens 3 years ago, which was absolutely liberating. It allowed me to put color on the walls, something I had never done as a renter. The apartment came together with ease, by introducing color harmonies and a few new pieces (rugs!) to our existing furniture, (much of which is vintage, antique, and flea market finds and the occasional treasure picked off the sidewalks of NY).
My greatest challenge was how to house our 46" TV. Nothing I found in any of the shops could accommodate the components, so I chose some reclaimed lengths of Victorian fencing and marble from Olde Good Things, and had them construct shelving based on my design. I love the results, as it complements my antique coffee table, and my taste for rusted, chipped, ornate cast & wrought metal.
Thanks, Jody !

colors -- cool
wall hangings -- cool
dead animal -- uncool :)
I am so envious of anyone who can put collections together, I have no sense when it comes to this but I always love how it looks!
I wanna see more! Normally the bed in the center of the room would drive me KEEEEEEEERAZY, but this works for me. Love the colors, the lighting, and everything about the art on the walls. VERY NICE!
Looks like a fun place to be a dinner/overnight guest! It's nice to see folks with a much different personal style than my own. This place really says "bold and romantic."
I always love to see when art is thrown together on the wall like this-it makes for such an interesting focal point in any room. The bed in the middle does drive me crazy but at the same time I think there is some magic to it. Nicely done, your home is beautiful!
Wow, the first thing I noticed was how amazingly well the objects are hung on the walls. SO well done.
I LOVE that there's bold colors on the walls and love the different framed arts.
That is quite a cactus! I love the piano stool stand for it, at least that's what I think it is?? Which flea markets round here do you shop?
Wonderful! So nice to see something other than white, antiseptic modern once in a while. Is that a real stuffed chicken in the first photo?
I love the baroque-meets-pop art aesthetic of the third picture, and the bed in the center of the room.
I couldn't live in a house with so much mustard color though.
Wow - So many things to see here!
I love the chickens in the LR as well as your vintage/crafted TV cabinet, the ceiling-hung draperies, the lighting fixtures and the way you've displayed your collections on the walls.
I'm curious tho - What's it like living w the bed in the center of the room, and what was the reason you decided on living with it that way rather than conventionally against the wall - or even facing the windows?
I love the chair on the wall! I have a chair or two I'd like to display more than use, so I may totally do this. You have a great place!
Gonna go with Mies on this one; "Less *is* more".
Love, love, love the colours and the beautifully-organized-but-eclectic wall decor. Anybody can fill a white box with expensive, fashionable, neutral furniture and then add a colourful accessory or two. But making such a range of objects work harmoniously is a real challenge and a labour of love. Well done!
Hi,
Thanks, y'all!
The link to my website seems to be broken. You can find me at www.jodyformica.com or www.scavengerjo.com.
BEPSF: The floating bed actually made it possible for me to fit so much stuff in one room - behind the bed is my "private space," where I have my dressing table. There is plenty of room between the bed and the night stands for even my 6'2" husband to get through. I wouldn't have it any other way.
AUDREKA: I shop ALL the flea markets, but I am ashamed to admit that I still haven't made it to the Brooklyn Flea. And it's a milking stool. I got it in Minnesota, I believe.
k1tsun3: yes, that is a real stuffed chicken. I know taxidermy is not everyone's cup of tea, but I did save this charmer from going into a landfill.
Thanks again for your enthusiastic comments!

No
the cat's cute
There is way too many pictures hanging on the walls. At a quick glance it looked interested, as I looked closer it looks like a junkie mess.
sunrise - hope you meant "junky" mess. Bit harsh otherwise. Not my cup 'O noodles, but looks like fun.
Too much "stuff" ...it just takes away from the overall ambiance. Imagine placing a really nice print on the wall over the sofa. It would just get lost with the competition.
Lovely! Just a friendly suggestion, however. Please, please PAINT YOUR CEILINGS, viewers! When walls have that much saturated color, your eye goes right up to a white ceiling, giving the impression you ran out of money! Choose a soft light neutral that has some of the wall color contained within. If your color scheme consists of one strong color combined with white, then a white ceiling is fine. Don't worry about that old myth that white makes a ceiling look higher. Color gives depth and creates a harmonious look.
jettsam - I'm with you - no.
too much everywhere, no visual resting place and overboard with the overthought whimsy. the yellow room with the ax, the chair on the wall, the red dress and the hulk & spidey on the ornate mirror would drive me to crazytown.
great paint color in the bedroom, and the living room is cool, except maybe that chicken.
Just thought I would comment in case anyone was wondering "What does her husband think of all this?"; well, here it is.
When Jody and I met, I did actually have a design aesthetic that leaned more Scandinavian modern (though I had not yet invested in a lot of furnishings). All the same, I always enjoyed spending time at her place. Then, as now, it had the combined appeal of the interest of being in a museum and being really comfortable at the same time. Our home has those same qualities. While I still admire minimalist design done well, for my own home I love being able to go around and appreciate not only the composition on each wall as a whole, but also each individual piece, sometimes feeling like I am rediscovering a piece (kind of hard to do when you only have one print over the couch and I don't have a problem focusing on one at a time). We've lived in this apartment for about four years now, and it's constantly evolving as Jody finds something interesting that fits in and gives away something else that no longer works -- and it feels more like home every day (and hasn't driven either of us crazy).
Jerry: Thanks for the suggestion regarding ceiling color, or rather, lack thereof. I didn't think of it myself (not sure why!) and now I have a new mission! Fun!
Wm: I love you! Thank you for humoring and honoring me!
Jody- I love, seriously L-O-V-E your place. Every single thing, it reminds me so much of my home! I think we're long lost sisters from different misters. XOXO
Thank you, Bridgette Taylor! I have not looked at this post for a long time, until my husband shared it with other like-minded flea market addicts. It's nice to see it's not completely forgotten. hugs!
