What could be more awesome than having your own LED coffee table? It's the perfect sort of mood-lighting that's needed during parties. Plus, you can fully program it, which is even better. These types of tables used to be in the realm of science-fiction, but someone has actually made one himself!

Joe has come up with this DIY 112-LED coffee table that just looks amazing. It would look great in almost any living room and will give it that special futuristic touch. His build is quite complex and uses an Arduino, a sort of micro-controller than can be controlled by a computer. It took Joe about a year to build, but he reckons that someone who doesn't go to school like he does, could complete it in 2 to 3 months.

We think that it looks great, and if you're interesting in trying to make your own, you should check out his post and the video below. However, we know that most of our readers aren't comfortable working with this, so we've come up with a bit of a hack for you.

While it's true that this incredible table really lights up your home, you can probably hack his great idea by just installing LED lights under your current coffee table. The effect is similar, a lot cheaper, and less time consuming! You could use these IKEA Dioder LED lighting strips, that will set you back about $50. These LED strips are made for bookcases, but you can also use them behind your computer monitor, around your desk, to create diffuse mood lighting.
