Name: Johanna & Mike
Location: Brooklyn Heights, NYC
As soon as our design-conscious friend heard we'd bought a 450- square-foot apartment, she gave us two Apartment Therapy books. Having grown up in hoarder households, we both wanted a space that felt bright and airy and uncluttered. Also, having just spent 5 years in graduate student housing, we wanted it to feel like a real home, no white walls, no beige cabinets; we needed color and whimsy and life. Space was the obvious problem, how to make a studio feel airy? Everything followed from that...
1- The first challenge was the sleeping alcove; we wanted it to be separate from the rest of the room, but we didn't want to cut off that space. After considering Japanese sliding doors and a well-placed bookshelf, we decided on sheer muslin curtains, which allow light in, but hide that area when we have guests over.
2- Painting the kitchen pass-through wall tomato red was also an early decision; Mike was dubious, Johanna was bold (guess who's writing this!).
3- Most of the furniture Mike had brought from LA where he'd lived before coming to NY for grad. school: The green mid-century medicine cabinet he found on the street and refurbished himself.
4- We also needed something to do with our books (we're both writers); the built-ins are one of our greatest life achievements and took an embarrassingly long time to build; they make good use of a slim space behind the front door. We became obsessed with floating bookshelves too and used them for color-blocked books by the windows and to make a nightstand with a Chris Ware-desgned issue of McSweeney's.
5- We took the big photo over the couch in Ireland, where Johanna's from, and had it blown up by a company in the UK. We like the idea of having two views of the Atlantic: the real one, out our window, looking towards Ireland, and the one over the couch, looking towards New York.
6- One of our favorite ideas from the Apartment Therapy books was the "landing strip," which we quickly implemented in the form of an Umbra aluminum "envelope" affixed to the wall next to the front door.
7- Because space was limited in the sleeping alcove, another idea we took from the Apartment Therapy book was to make a vintage-style hanging light, using an Edison bulb and Sundial wire.
8- We painted the wall opposite the front door with chalkboard paint. Our only rule was that we weren't allowed to write "to do" lists on it!
Thanks, Johanna & Mike!

Good article, up you clearly thought about how you want to use the space. People are under increasing pressure at work and greater stress, so coming home to calm home is something to look forward to. Thanks for sharing :-)
I think its awesome! What a great use of a relatively small space, though I must confess Im not feeling the red wall as much.
Very nice! I quite like the red wall and I think the green desk is a perfect accent against it. It adds a bit of drama and warmth to what seems like an otherwise serene and cool colour palette. The best of both moods!
I would like a whole tour, including the view!
I love this studio apartment. I'm not a fan of red walls when it's many walls or one very large wall (my former neighbor painted her whole living room red and it made her place seem smaller). However, one small wall? And with the white table, chairs & lampshade - perfect! I agree with natika about the mint green desk as well. The whole space has a warmth to it. My former studio never looked so stylish, that's for sure. Thanks for sharing.
ec05 - A full tour is in the works - stay tuned.
For my taste as a book lover, it's perfect. That's a very good idea with the curtains over the bed - it looks romantic and whimsical, yet serves as a very definite room divider. I tried the Japanese Screens in my small space, and they were good (cheap ones from Ikea) but I think the curtain idea is more versatile and beautiful. The material you chose was also perfect - airy and not quite opaque. Well done!
Where did you find the coffee table? I love it.
Very nice! The built-ins were a space saver.
Johanna & Mike... Well you missed the warning track if you wanted to avoid it looking institutional... Cuz' you hit it outta the park. Your space is so cozy! Good job.
This looks so comfortable and relaxing. And I love the tomato red wall!
Sweet! Can't wait to see more.
Amazing. I'm saving that idea for the sleeping alcove... figuring out how to best use your space in this city isn't easy, but this is spot on!
I didn't even notice the red wall until I went back and looked again after reading all the comments about it. It's a PERFECT shade of red and just made the space feel warm and inviting to me. It didn't stand out like "Hi, I'm a red wall." Maybe that's why I just didn't notice it specifically before. And I've never been a fan of boldly colored accent walls..so, I have to say Great Job on that. I also love the bed nook and the bookshelves. A lovely, lovely space.
I dig that sleeping area! Very Asian!
How so? I'm curious because I'd never call that Asian.
FAB! Wonderfully calming and well laid out. I Love the Ireland pic above the couch ( I am from Ireland originally ) and also have things in my apartment to remind me of home ) :)
Beautiful! Can't wait for the full tour! Can I make a request for a floor plan too? Hand-drawn is fine, but I want to see the space's divisions more clearly. I'm still trying to subdivide some of mine and having trouble
Love the juxtaposition of the red wall and the green cabinet. These warm and cool colors have whetted my appetite for tomato soup with avocado. Yum.
Love! Glad a full tour is coming.
Well thought out, very stylish, warm and inviting. Welcome home.
What a nice, well-planned little place! Great article, too. Thanks for sharing!
Hey emaria, we found that at this little store in Great Barrington, MA, called Seeds & Co, I think. It doubles as a chair, actually, when we have company. Very sturdy.
Thanks for the wonderful show of support, everybody! Hoping to show you more soon...
-- I'm the "mike" of the pair, btw...
Love the red wall. Can you share the paint color?
I love everything. Especially the coffee table...want to find one similar! Also love the red accent wall. Great job!
I love, love, love everything about this apartment! Can't wait for the full tour.
I really appreciate the thought put into the picture behind the couch and what it means to you. Things like that make a home very special.
