Name: John Schoenfeld & Sophie Schoenfeld
Location: Joshua Tree, California

Years lived in: 7
Desert living is quite different than living in the city. Many Angelenos make the trip to Joshua Tree to relax and bask in the hot and dry climate. John and Sophie wanted to create the best of both worlds when designing their home. They wanted the local desert environment reflected in their decor, but with modern elements incorporated.

The saber tooth tiger bone clone found on their bar in the kitchen is a replica of a saber tooth tiger found in the La Brea Tar Pits many ages ago. It is John's tie-in to his love for Los Angeles and its history. Many of the accessories found in their home were purchased from local flea markets. Of course, one of the best features about the home is its location and view of the mountains.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Modern meets high desert homestead cabin
Inspiration: A feeling of adventure, a sense of getting away, road trips, friends and family, seasons, and creating quality time.
Favorite Element: The bar — this is what used to be a wall that separated the kitchen from the living room and now is a great intersection for socializing and participating in our family and social gatherings. From the bar you feel like you are connecting in the whole space.
Biggest Challenge: Merging the original 1954 structure with the new addition in a harmonious way, that didn't feel like "oh this is where the old house ends and the addition begins." Thank you O2 Architecture!
What Friends Say: "Oh My God!" I think this is a result of a somewhat understated entry and the overall surroundings. There are two abandoned shacks in the area and you have to drive a mile on a pretty washed out dirt road to get there, so there is a pretty strong contrast.
Biggest Embarrassment: Not knowing the extreme effect of the heat and dryness of the high desert. While installing some of the wood elements we ran into a lot of warping issues. The zebra wood basically had to be purchased twice. So many of the pieces twisted into shapes that wouldn't work for the bath structure.
Proudest DIY: I've done a lot of stuff in the house, but building some of the rock walls around the house has got to be the most rewarding. I literally moved tons of rocks, so during that time there was no need for the gym.
Biggest Indulgence: Hiring O2 Architecture for the remodel. And all the custom stuff in the house — bar, bathtub enclosure, and custom record storage.
Best Advice: Take some time to be in the space before you start making decisions on how to change the layout of rooms, windows, etc.
Dream Source: Everywhere and anywhere. Part of the fun is keeping your eyes open for stuff whether it be traveling the world or walking through the local thrift stores. The dream is to stay inspired.

Looks like a wonderful place to live! I love how spare the bedroom is and then how there's more warmth thru the public spaces. Looks like you all have a great time living there & enjoy entertaining your lucky friends!
I love everything! Absolutely perfect. Warm and cozy, yet modern.
This is officially my dream home! Bravo... simply gorgeous!
I think the kitchen could use some warming up. However, this maybe my favorite of all house tours I have seen. The house is beautifully done.
maybe should be may be
Not exactly my taste but it sure makes me miss home. I grew up in that area. I love the outdoor spaces, and the bench/shelves underneath the window where the records are is awesome.
Not my style, BUT still a super-rad house. I want to bathe in that tub in the dappled light and drink cocktails at that bar. Well done!
Beeramyd! <3
Jealous. So very, very jealous. Of everything. Everything.
One of m y favorite house tours ever on apartment therapy. Beautiful, homey, interesting, comfortable, imaginative, and peaceful. It has all the things I wish a home would have.
Their favourite part is my favourite part too: that groovy curvy bar. Very stylish!
Oh. My. God. I'm smitten.
It's a nice house... I LOVE the views, and it's very well organized, but it doesn't seem very lived in. It comes off as stark to me.
Amazing, lovely, so cozy and clear. Bright and tiddy, but It looks a little far away, in the middle of nowhere...
Loving the storage bench with records too. I love double duty when it looks that sexy.

Where did you get the brass lamps in the bedroom and in front of the map? Also the saber tooth tiger skull that is amazing. Cool.
gorgeous, simple, serene, organic. my favorite house tour yet! does the house look this way on an average day, or is it especially tidy for the tour?
wow, talk about a dream house! That view just says it all. Imagine being able to sit anywhere in that house and watch beautiful sunsets every single night. The parties that you could have in that house would be amazing! Love love love it!
So beautiful!
I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT! I LOVE IT!
wassup with the blue painters tape holding up a pic?

I'm drooling right along with most of the others here! Your house is STUNNING and that bar is PHENOMINAL!! And the desert view...
Fogettaboutit!!
I'm on my way - see ya next week! haha
Would you mind sharing a tidbit or two of info?
1) The orange ball dispenser (?) on the dining table - is that a sugar castor or something else?
2) The horizontal strip above the master bed - is that a mirror or cut-out niche in the wall?
Thank you!!
Agreed, that bar is AWESOME! And, I know there's many others like it, but where did the kitchen table come from?
awesome
So calm, and minimal, but warm, all at once. Well done!
Paradise! My dream house and dream husband!
This is like nothing i've seen before ! Unbelievable. What a dreamplace. Congratulations :)
Lovely house. Really beautiful. My friend Anja Schaefer shot alot of these shots along with John. I think you spelled her name wrong for the photographer credit.
Thanks for the correction AT!
holy sh*t!!!! what an AMAZING place!! Thanks for the eye candy. I love everything about this house. I also think the kitchen could probably use warming up (I would probably stock it full of vignettes of kitchen tools and knick knacks)...but the kitchen is still so awesome anyway. who cares?! just throw and couple pets into the mix and it instantly gives your home the "cuddly" factor. haha.
I am going to force my husband to look at this house tour when he comes home. I like it THAT much!!!
also nice touch to see the faces that live here. I can tell they are smiling because they live in a very inspiring environment. I am soooo jealous!
(not that my place is ugly...it's just not as COOL as this one!!! ;-)
when can I move in?
Beautiful home! Please share the source for:
