Name: John
Location: East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City
Size: 900 square foot rental loft
Years Lived In: 1+ year
John is a native New Yorker and used to working and playing hard. For most of John's life, his dwelling place was not a home but rather just a place to land after a busy day working, a week on the road, or a month traveling the world. He paid little attention to decor, interior design, the comforts of home, or the way a home should make one feel.
John's work life hasn't slowed down, but he's growing up and has decided it's time to start actively shaping his environment. John just started a new company, CLDmkt.com which is like Craigslist, Twitter style. As he built a framework for people to de-clutter their lives, John began to think about the clutter with which he surrounded himself and how unsettled it made him feel.
This new approach of clean, spare living, in a relatively new apartment, has changed the way John understands the value and meaning of a home. He's like a posterchild for Apartment Therapy! Now that his apartment is clean, and is showcased with the furniture, objects, and clothing he likes most, he thinks of it as a "sanctuary!" In fact, John says, "I feel better about waking up because everything is so put together."
Living in a peaceful, purposefully curated home makes John, as he says, "ready for the next day." He likes feeling refueled rather than drained when he walks through the door, or lays down to sleep on his newly decked out bed.
John's place is a work in progress. He will have to find a balance between what works for his way of life, what works aesthetically, and what keeps giving him that restorative sense of calm — that everything is put together in just the right way.

Apartment Therapy Survey:
Style: I tend to go for clean/modern design and furnishing aesthetics. I like things that are minimalist in nature, but very direct in the way they execute; museum pieces that are highly-functional... Like the Eames chair that I don't have. This contrasts the clutter that my life brings into the mix. I tend to leave a trail of clutter-y despair everywhere I go, so it's important that my living situation be neat and composed.
Inspiration: Travel in general. Aside from seeing how aesthetics differ in different places, I think many hotels do a great job of providing the right functionality mixed with clean design decor. The Peninsula in Tokyo is my new favorite spot; The room felt warm, but was very well appointed with gadgets and gizmos to make anyone feel right at home.... a toilet set with a motion sensor, auto-close curtains with a built in timer, a hallway accessible laundry drop-box so you don't have to deal with pesky hotel staffers... A stark contrast to the 4th-floor walk-up, seat of my pants living style back home. Also, on the road I always tend to find just the right tchotchkes to add to my New York environment.
Favorite Element: By far, the reigning champ in the apartment is the new shaggy red/orange/yellow carpet. For me its color provides a pop of fun and brilliance every time I glance in its direction. I was looking for a way to add something to spice up the whole place, and for me this is it. That said, lint-wise, it's not the greatest of friends...
Biggest Challenge: What to do with all the vertical space, still think there is something really cool I could string from the ceiling or place on the 2nd floor living room walls to really impact overall look and feel. A crazy chandelier, or mounted moose-head would perhaps do the trick.
What Friends Say: Wow, cool place brah?! Joking, no one ever even really sees it. I'm such a work-a-holic, it's pretty sad and lonely unfortunately. My apartment is more a quiet spot for me to regroup before jumping back into the fray, again and again day after day, or as a jumping off point between trips.
Biggest Embarrassment: In life or with the apartment? Apartment wise, kind of think it's the home office/walk-in closet. This is two-fold embarrassment... On the one-hand, the fact that I have to work so much from home speaks to a life that's too work driven. On the other hand, things aren't laid out well at all from a storage standpoint. I'm always running back and forth picking clothes from my upstairs dresser and my downstairs closets.
Proudest DIY: I hung the curtains myself. I like getting my hands dirty sometimes. This required drilling, a level, and a few runs to home depot. I tend to be pretty handy with simple things. I try to delegate larger projects, in most instances, but definitely see the fun in getting it done myself.
Biggest Indulgence: The bed linens. Prior to the upgrade, I had a twin blanket on a king bed coupled with some god-awful sheets. This time, went for the gusto and got premium bedding from Sferra, so far it's definitely an incredible shift.
Best Advice: Don't buy something just because you need it — this is how all bad furniture gets bought. Make sure you're in love with every piece before you buy... even if it means waiting a while for the right stuff, or living in an unfurnished apartment.
Dream Source/Resources: The Mandarin Oriental. The colors always look right, with just the right amount of stuff so that it feels homey. At least to me, this might make someone else gag, who knows... To me the home should be a place to feel pampered, definitely not quite there yet but this is how I would want it to be were life a dream.

This house is not my style, but kudos to John for how happy it makes him. Also, best "Proudest DIY," maybe ever. What I don't understand about this post are all of the photos inside the fridge, making food, eating food. Overall the photos in this house tour are lacking and don't really showcase the house.
MERYL: I too was confused as to why we are seeing the inside of the frig.
Likes: Wall paper, red cabinet (wonderful), wall art especially the female painting; possibly anthromorphic (?), staircase, the red touches through out, and the fun chair pillow.
Dislikes: Knife holder. I don't find anything cute or funny about violence in any form or matter.
Suggestions: It seems that the wall art over the TV are too high.
Overall nice space.
Love the place. Especially the rug matching the Obey propaganda pieces :) Put out more Bourbon, throw in some Etro shirts, and replace IWC with Omega... and you have my husband in a nutshell lol
I love that C-shaped table in the entry area (1st pic in gallery). What's the source?
I love that white armchair in the office - any idea where John got it?
Also, I too loved the Proudest DIY. Ha!
I understand wanting to show us the Dom Perignon, but not the Skippy... ;)
Nice PBJ tutorial. Now I finally understand.
I love that I am finally reaching an age where guys are beginning to care about their apartments - making them nice and having an opinion about style. If I went on a date with John and we went back to his place and it looked like this... I'd be pleased!
You got your hands "dirty" by hanging curtains haha!
I too expected more of a house tour, rather than a fridge tour. And "orange" you glad it's so well stocked with your favorite things....in triplicate times two! ;)
Love that four drawer boxy cabinet in the bedroom (next to the screen). Source please?
Things I liked:
-The knife holder
-The bar tray (although it would only hold a fraction of my liquor cabinet)
-The kitchen countertop and red cabinets look sharp together.
-The oranges in the crisper. Looks staged but makes the fridge look fresh.
Things I didn't like:
-Carefully placed remotes so far away from the couch, as if they're on display
-Using disposable paper towels instead of plates to eat oranges and make sandwiches.
-Photos of the fridge, including wasteful bottles of iced tea (Here's a good list of iced tea you can make at home -->http://www.thekitchn.com/10-fresh-cold-takes-on-iced-tea-recipe-roundup-173643)
-Numerous bottles of water imported from almost exactly the other side of the planet.
-Photos of expensive watch boxes on display, expensive chanpange in the fridge with no other reason for it other than to show it off... probably not his decision, but the editor should know that we've all seen a bottle of Dom.
Agreed with Carrotsticks -- the conspicuous consumption shown in the fridge and closet shots is pretty gratuitous. Whether it's a $15 bottle of Cristalino or a $150 bottle of Dom Perignon, it's not a design element and we don't really need to see it.
That said, this is one of the better-looking men's apartments I've seen on this site. Well done, John.
No. Wire. Hangers. EVER.
I really like the description of his apartment's transformation and the effect of the appearance and atmosphere. Good principles!
This tour was so terrible, it made me upset- a photo of the corner of his bathroom? 3 photos of the inside of his fridge? Showing off his Nikes?
Enough with showcasing collections of liquor. Nothing against booze, but really? And the inside of a fridge? Please.
What is this???
Close-ups of a PB&J, a remote control collection, and a toilet bowl/dirty bathroom tile? THREE photos of the inside of the refrigerator??
My 76 year old grandma put up every curtain rod in her entire home, I should let her know that she's "pretty handy around the house".
I LOVE the shot of the oranges in the refrigerator drawers. It doesn't strike me as any more incongruous than other House Tour shots of necklaces hanging in the bedroom. Plus, wasn't Ed Grimley's refrigerator once full of oranges when Tina Turner wanted to borrow an onion? Or was it the other way around?
Nice fridge....
All these photos looked ridiculously staged, but overall I really dig the place. Nice job
$70k in IWC boxes?
The chair, surprisingly came from Macy's believe it or not. A throw-back from my first apartment.
I know! Half way through swapping them out.
Unfortunately, can't remember where it came from specifically. I believe it's a vintage piece that I inherited from a friend a few years back :-).
The C Shaped table came from Crate and Barrel. I really needed a place to drop keys, phones and things when I get home. If not, who knows where they'll end up.
Nice place. Weird tour. (But that's not John's fault.)
The apartment itself looks nice but the house tour lost me right on the picture of the plentiful remote controls and game doohickeys. My eyes just glazed over.
Although I do realize the space itself does not allow a different layout I would personally have an issue with the open staircase right over the kitchen island. I thinking of all the dust falling nicely on the food bellow. And believe me, I am not exactly a germophobe because I have always lived with several dogs but this always bothers me.
Over all,I like it,BUT,there are things Id change! I like the artwork, but the scale is just all wrong for where they are placed.Black sectional and chrome furniture are just too predictable,Id go with different upholstery and perhaps a nice wood table. Its a great space, but it needs "warming" up.I think the knife holder is awesome! And completely off topic, but as a big guy myself I loathe the fact you cant find a decent shirt in most stores that ISNT plaid! But all in all,its not a bad looking space, but it does scream "Batchelor"!
John,
Get yourself a Logitech Harmony universal remote instead of using all those individual remotes. You won't regret it!. And are your PS3 remotes Colorware'd or are they stock editions?
Good call, thanks for that, I'll give it a try, I hate my remote situation. Definitely in need of an update there... With the PS3, the black was standard.... think the red was stock too I'm pretty sure.
I feel like you're right with the plaid. I've been diligent hunting for solids only the past few months, tired of looking like a table-cloth!
This tour was presented in a memorable way. The complained about staging shows humor and corroborates his comments about having a work driven life. It is interesting that the tour that should win the please-stop-showing-off-you're-making-me-nauseous award received mainly kudos and hardly a negative comment. Comparatively, I'd rather see some staged oranges or shelved sneakers. Love the plaid and the gore-tex.
By AT standards this isn't a tour at all. I think it's AT promoting this guy's site and getting people to click on it. He's probably a friend of a friend etc. etc.
This tour needed at least five more pictures of the inside of his fridge.
I'm sorry-- I don't see the creativity, the memorable anything here. By this measure, anyone can have a house tour!! And I was surprised by the choice of "matures" for this tour; did it mature from fratboy chic to man-child cool?
I hate to be so negative, but I really expect more from AT. I'm not saying everything has to be a design-wow, but certainly homey or creative or something!
Wow. Am I the only person who found this tour entertaining. Looks good, clean lines, just enough color, organized.
The apartment itself has some interesting character, but at least half of these photos needed to be edited out.
I don't need to know that John buys ice tea or the cheapest PB legally fit for human consumption. Really AT, all of those superfluous shots took away the charm from this tour.
John, I think your place looks great! Clean, modern, minimalistic... everything I love basically. I'm very jealous right now. It's not to everyone's taste but it's obviously to yours and thus your home is a place you feel comfortable in and that's all that matters.
I'm quite astounded however, at all the negativity surrounding this tour. Everything from your shirts to how cheap the PB is that you buy. For the first time I'm ashamed of the AT community.
I agree that there needs to be less close up shots of things like an alcohol stash but overall your place is great and I for one want to thank you for opening it up to us. I just hope that people don't turn off from opening up their homes for fear of facing criticism for how they live and that they own too many remotes. I personally would never let AT into my home after reading these comments.
I can only speak for myself, but my complaint about this tour has nothing to do with John or how he lives, it's about the lackluster tour and absolute silliness of a lot of the photos. We know people have remotes, we don't need a photo of them lined up. The refrigerator shots aren't even worth mentioning they are so stupid. There isn't even a picture of the kitchen.
I almost think this tour is an experiment to see how many nasty comments people will post. I absolutely love this site and visit it many times a day (work can be a little slow) but I am seeing a lot more quantity than quality these days.
I really think (hope!) we are being punked with this one.
i thoroughly enjoyed the pb & j picture as well as the collection of plaid shirts. Epic modern manliness
Lovely apartment! Where is the entry way table from (with sunglasses etc) from?
Thanks!
I think you might have misunderstood the feedback on this tour. As I said, I have nothing against John's home. We have different tastes, yes, but it makes him happy, awesome! What I do not like about this house tour are the photos and editing; my dissatisfaction is entirely with AT, and it seems that is the general consensus. As even you stated, there needs to be less [superfluous] close up shots. These are not critiques about how John lives, they are critiques of the editorial quality of this house tour, which is severely lacking.
maybe it's a new photographer who worked on this shoot...or someone filling in. I have been viewing tours on this site for years now...regularly...like most of the people who post...maybe all of them.
the photos in this tour were the weirdest I've ever seen on here...some were just lame things to take photos of (fridge...sneakers) also...it seems like John is eating a lot of sandwiches...one of the first few photos is him eating a whole one...and then later him making one...not that I never eat two sandwiches...but...i just got the feeling that the photos were out of place.
maybe if this tour were more clearly about...the home being a work in progress...i mean its mentioned...but still...that shot of the bathroom corner...i dont understand why thats in there...
i love love the living room. looks super cozy. and yes. that c shaped table is rad. also. i want a pb and j sandwich right now. maybe two of them ;-)
I love it, this is so the ANTI-Tour. If you're proud of your oranges, flaunt it!
another vote against including photos of food in house tours
i liked this tour. and the pics gave me a very clear picture of this kind of guy. he doesn't want it to be "warm." it's a masculine dude place, one which other guys want and women want to go to. it's inviting and cool. so what if he's showing off his stuff? guys love cool stuff.
Not feeling the telly shrine. Unless they are place holders, the Obey pieces would benefit from mats and larger frames. The Lady deserves a better home, maybe above the dresser.
Perhaps you might like the Porche on the longer wall. Nice palette.
I love your apartment, John! It's beautiful. Where did you get the coffee table in the living room? I want it! Thanks.
Geez, lighten up people! He agreed with my plaid shirt comment,it was in NO way meant to be insulting, just an observation from a big guy who cant find a decent shirt! I like his place,as Im sure he does, but offered my humble opinion on what I think might be interesting in it.Im gettting tired of every comment board turning into some sort of ettiquette lesson, people hopefully know that there might be some negative opinions on their style, and hopefully they are mature enough to not take it personally!
Thank you for opening your home for curious strangers to gawk at while searching for the 'ah ha' moment that inspires them in their own space. For me, the little square black table was the spark that will move me to utilize a small nook similarly.
The PB & J made me smile as I made/enjoyed one for lunch today.
Drinking Yamazaki? Great choice!!!
i enjoyed the tour as well. Who needs to see another cute house with a pile of farmers market produce and a stand mixer on the counter, or a bunch of painted vintage furniture and chevron pillows in the livingroom. Seen it!
At least you can drink the booze and wear the shoes, I bet they bring a lot more joy and function to Johns life than a vintage typewriter or globe. I know guys who have houses just like this. Its realistic. They are being true to their lifestyle. They don't bake, they don't cook every night, they don't wanna dust tchotkes.
This was a perfectly attractive place, far better than most we've seen on AT in the last few months. Not my style, but very nice. I like it. I do agree with the comments about the refrigerator interior shots. What was that about?
The photography is beyond bizarre. I was too irritated by it to enjoy the house much.
Peanut Butter and Jelly??? Really.
What's next? Toothbrush, a close-up of their toilet paper or even more exciting... a sock drawer!
Lives in NY, travels the world, hates 'pesky people', work hard/play hard (oh please!), requisite Apple system to be on AT, AT poster child? Really? This has got to be the dumbest house tour of the year.
This kind of house tour should be categorized in a different way, like "I recently became interested in interior design, how'd I do?" Then we might all be a little more enthusiastic about the carefully spaced remotes and curated-liquor-collection-in-a-tray, the way one encourages a child who has just taken up finger painting.
I want that wallpaper and went to his source and cannot find it. Can you give me the pattern name besides brown and Graham? I have been looking for it for months. Help!
Truly a guy's place. I like the New York glasses on the "bar." However the narrative is written as though John is "Today's Adoptable Child" and is quite off-putting. If this is the new style at AT, please drop it.
I hope all the people complaining about the photos are not the same ones that voted that god awful nursery into the top place in the color contest.
where is that face throw pillow from? It is so friggen cute!!
Come on! Isn't there an editor?
Based on the title ("dwelling matures into sanctuary", seriously?), I didn't expect to like this place but I really do. Nicely done!
I don't understand the complaints. Plenty of house tours include random pictures - cats, dogs, kids, the homeowner, food, closets, close-ups of everything from kid's toys to books to jewelery and endless rows of pictures of tchotchkes. Not sure how this one is different.
He does need a universal remote though ;-)
John: your place looks great and I'm glad you are eating enough.
AT: WT...??
UGH. hanging curtains is not a DIY Project. I hung curtains when I 14. I could go on... Anyway, there isn't much creativity in this place, but I see he is TRYING. Unfortunately this tour says "I'm trying to hard" and it is so not working for me. I agree with another commenter that this is screaming bachelor pad, in a annoying cliche way. He clearly has no actual style, but maybe with more practice he can really nail it down. I can see the effort with the clean lines and trying to incorporate color, etc. And I do like his choices for the bedding. Maybe with more practice, over time, it can really be something.
I think this was an eye-pleasing man place. Yes, I also qestioned the inside-the-fridge photos. I have to say though, that the critique should be thoughtful, and design focused. If someone opens up their home to us, they're opening up their heart as well. Play nice, kids!
Dumb pictures. I don't understand a table with place setting as a display. Who wants to eat from dusty dishes? Not John...he removed all 4 settings so he could enjoy his sandwich on a clean paper towel.
What's happening here is sad. If you don't like someone's work, be it art, photography, wardrobe, keep it to yourself. Where's the grace? Do you go to a friend's home and criticize it. I'd never have you back. And as far as his closets, refrigerator and liquor are concerned, they show how the man lives. Sad.
I LOVE it...........so clean and modern...I love the photos of the inside of the fridge it just added to the fresh look of his whole apartment.......I need him to organize my place...........peace out
I really enjoyed this tour and photos. Coming from Australia I enjoyed seeing the peanut butter jelly sandwich, when my daughter asked for one I put the jam on top of the peanut paste, Johns way is better. Having read the story of Johns work and how busy he is I liked the glimpse into the fridge and its contents and how he ate a meal in his surroundings this tour really tickled my fancy it wasnt boring at all I found it informative and humorous.
Great space.
I really like this place... it makes sense. Love how the sectional is arranged around the column.
I think that wallpaper is "cow parsley" by cole & son
@minimalist1: Oh, come on.
"And as far as his closets, refrigerator and liquor are concerned, they show how the man lives."
What, he wears shirts and eats oranges? And??
Yeah first thing I thought was that you need the one remote! Yummo to cold oranges & scotch :-)
Yep I am inspired to rush out now & by a bus-load of oranges for my crisper.
Weirdest tour ever!
Uhhh... many, many, many AT tours are friends of friends, though. Or just their friend. Doesn't make them not tours per se.
I think I'd rather see the inside of his fridge than the endless parade of tchotchkes that are AT's usual tour-fillers. So I'm not really getting the complaints.
Oh hay, captions for the pictures! I don't care if (some) captions are really obvious, I still like them.
(Actually, I liked the pictures of the fridge contents. They actually told me something about him, like he probably doesn't cook much and he likes what he likes.)
And yet, garden1997 says they actually benefited from it! XD
This is the 3rd tour in as many weeks where I've seen people post personal, nasty comments. Why would any homeowner want to expose themselves to such a bunch of criticism and hostility? I appreciate people being willing to share their spaces. Thanks John! Enjoyed the tour!
Comments are a bit harsh but unfortunately I see a lot of snark around AT. Agree some of the shots were a bit...um. Weird.
However, that said, I think for someone who has never been 'into' interiors like so many of us are, he's done a fine job of making his space completely his own. I know too many guys who really don't care and it shows. I love the artwork in the lounge but agree, please lower them to eye level - they need to be appreciated.
And I love the Cole & Son wallpaper - probably a bit biased as I've used it in my own lounge as well and I love seeing it used in completely and utterly different spaces. It just works so well as a jumping off point.
(You can see it here: http://gettingitswoonworthy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/take-seat-announcement-2-in-which-i.html)
Ok, so not everything in John's space is 'inspired' but I think he's made a pretty damn good start and I'd love to see how the space evolves as his tastes mature and develop. Well done, John. You go on and enjoy that PB&J and don't let the haters get ya down!
I have no problem with all the fridge and closet shots-- part of what I like about AT is the interviews/insight into the owner/renter, rather than just seeing one generic, well-styled home after another. (And these personal shots were kind of a nice change of pace from the usual 8+ requisite shots of the person's dog.)
I'm digging the sleek bachelor vibe, John, and I'm dying to know where the clock on your media console came from. Also you're reminding me to pick up some Hendrick's...
Typical bachelor pad colors, but much neater. I'd like to know where he got the white desk chair in front of the 2 Macs.
Fridge? Remotes? Shirts? Shoes? Sandwiches? Did I miss anything? And the knife holder is sick (and no, I don't mean that in a good way).
John seems like a great guy! But I can't help but feel like this whole tour was like an advertisement for...John. Are we buying him?
Maybe the author was trying to do it more like An Afternoon With or Freunde Von Freunden, but it just came across as a little odd.
This is a phat dude's home. Very real, sleek, and nice. Stop hatin' people.
It's a replica Twemco replica clock that my business partner gave me... love it :-). Been looking to buy a real Twemco, wall mounted day and date, but haven't found one yet.
The chairs came from West Elm. In all honesty though, they haven't really held up that well... had to replace a couple of times unfortunately :-).
Thanks Jess! Glad you enjoyed...
Not to seem contrary, but I can't count the photos that have sent members into
sub-orbital fantasy at seeing a built-out closet, photos of someone stirring a pot
with nothing in it, etc. I'm just saying the mean comments are just that: mean.
The photos do give insight into this guy. You just have to dig a little.
i didn't mind this tour so much, but it wasn't the best. i like the dining table area the best, and i quite like the kitchen and living room. i'm also a sucker for hendrick's :) but this really looks like a place where the person bought things they were "supposed" to get to have a fine, put together looking home - rather than things that please them.
The apartment is pretty cool. I usually don't like these types of modern styled lofts, but the walls look great--very clean. Really love the rug and red cabinets.
I love this! I really liked seeing him make a sandwich and pouring himself a drink. Great, masculine home!
Hey John - I really love your place. Can you tell me where you found that coffee table? Thank you.
this tour was more charming than impressive or inspirational. the paper towel "plate" and carefully placed remote controls i think just reinforces the title of the post- this is a straight guy who finally started to care about his surroundings. its a step in the right direction, but not yet "inspired" design.
