Memory games are great fun but the big manufacturers tend to favor corny images. Luckily, there some great sets out there that appeal to kid and adult tastes alike.
Most of these have been around a few years (a testament to their appeal since they are still being made) and Jonathan Adler is the latest to bring his signature (colorful!) take to the classic memory matching game.

Kid-O makes two beautiful wooden ones.
I would add Patrick Hruby's memory game, too. Gorgeous. It looks like it might be out of print, though. If you see one, snatch it up!
Plan Toys also make a lovely wooden one, with curved fronts (where the picture is) so that it is easier to turn over. Hape has a wooden version as well. The images on a both are simple and lovely. I love the durability of the wooden ones for younger children (and before they are ready for memory, you can use the animals to match pairs or learn animal sounds). I'll have to check out the versions above for when my son is older! Memory was my favorite game as a child.
We have the Charley Harper one which is simply beautiful. My daughter loves to figure out what they all are.
