A last minute invite dropped into my inbox this morning, an invitation for an event which piqued both my design and technology interests (but unfortunately I can't attend due to geographical distance). This afternoon at Sotheby's in New York, Apple's Sir Jonathan Ive, designer Marc Newson, and Bono will come together to host a (RED) Auction celebrating some of the most iconic designs in modern history...

The 40 curated pieces, including the special edition Mac Pro above (with a selling price estimated in the $40,000 - $60,000 range), span the decades and represent some of the most iconic products in fashion, tech, décor and automobile design throughout those years (including two one-of-a-kind pieces created just for the auction). The biggest names in design and art participated for the fundraiser, including Tom Dixon, Dieter Rams, Jasper Morrison, and Damien Hirst, amongst many others lending their talents for a worthy cause.

Proceeds from the sales will benefit of the Global Fund to fight against AIDS in Africa.

Highlights include icons of design by:

  • Hermès custom red Cavale saddle
  • Range Rover with custom badging, side vents, grey & white leather interior
  • FLOS “Arco” lamp with custom red marble base
  • Valextra customized luggage set with custom red tags and inner belt straps
  • Corning a space shuttle window in custom stand designed by Ive & Newson
  • Louis Vuitton A Murakami steamer trunk containing 33 Murakami bags
  • Dom Pérignon 1966 bottle with custom red foil and custom red cooler case
  • Steinway & Sons custom piano in white and red.
