What I Love About My Small Home:
I share this rented space with two wonderful roommates who have enjoyed watching the evolution of the decor come together over time. I love that it is a social space and though small, has welcomed over 50+ guests for seasonal parties. Although concealed, every available storage space has been utilized, including empty instrument cases under the sofa for holiday decor and lights! I also love the collected sensibility and that a story goes along most of the items in the space. It is truly possible to be happy in a small space!
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space:
1. In such a small space, it helps to draw the eye up. Painting the vertical stripes in the living room, even in a slightly darker shade, does just that while adding a touch of whimsey and depth to the walls. In the bedroom, hanging many small to medium pieces of art up to the ceiling provides an illusion of a bigger space as well. Finally, the cornices on the windows, which consist of an upholstered board in velvet and then trimmed in brass nailheads also emphasize the height of the windows. 2. I used grosgrain ribbon to achieve the look of molding at the top perimeter of the living room and kitchen walls. This is an inexpensive way to add a rich finishing touch for much less! 3. Flea markets and craigslist are great sources for unique items. The secretary in the bedroom was free and truly helped to complete the look! Taking the time to look for things may lead to unexpected finds.
