Name: Julian (7)
Location: Toronto, Canada
Division: International
Room Size: 73 square feet

Tip for Living Small with Kids: Small is cozy. The more space you have, the more you tend to fill it up with belongings. Living small means paring down to what you really need and cherish. I encourage our kids to choose what objects have the most meaning to them whether for plain fun or sentimental reasons. I encourage Julian to keep stuff off the floor by giving him movable storage pieces to stash his treasures.

Biggest Design Challenge in this Room: Sloped ceilings and small low windows. Although sloped ceilings add character they also eat up valuable vertical space for storage. We have added a long shelf for display of treasures. I find it visually lengthens the room. Small low windows combined with a north facing room limit natural light. We have painted the room white. This keeps the space light and airy.

We have hung vintage replica airplanes handmade by my dad. These help draw the eye up. Bonus: family heirloom made by Grandpa! The floors are a light colored hardwood as well. Pops of color brighten the space with bedding, furniture and accessories.

Favorite Thing About This Room: I love all of the vintage furniture in the room. The dresser was made by my grandfather and used by my mother as a child. The spindle bed was a gift from a friend (his childhood bed) that we painted a cheerful red.

Although small it is a cozy place to cuddle and read bedtime stories!
