- What I Love About My Small Home:
- Just about everything. We love that we have a working fireplace, which made this winter much more cheerful than usual. We also love the huge windows and skylight. The apartment gets amazing light (especially in the morning), and we rigged up an indoor garden by building shelves in the kitchen window. However, our favorite thing about the apartment is probably the high ceilings. We made the most of the vertical space by building a sleeping loft and all sorts of shelves.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- Our biggest challenge was figuring out how to make use of the sleeping alcove. When we measured the apartment before moving in, we realized that there was no way to fit a queen-sized mattress into the area while still being able to open the closet door. We also wanted to find a way to maximize storage: In addition to the normal (tiny) closet, there was a large lofted closet with sliding doors...but it was 7 feet above the floor. So, Eric designed our lofted bed, with stairs that double as bookcases. The 7-foot-high closet is now accessible since it's level with the bed, and we made a bedside/nightstand area by leaving the closet slightly open and fitting a cardboard box into the opening. The whole area underneath the bed serves as a giant walk-in closet: We mounted two clothes racks and a shoe shelf on the back wall, and we each have a dresser.

This place is amazing! I love the stair/bookcase, the upperbed, and th kitchen. I woul like to see the bathroom.
LOVE!
Those bookshelf stairs are so cool! Really imaginitive idea for storage and such a simple idea! Also love the clothes storage under the loft and the fact that you have a couple other closet areas too. I really think this is my favorite so far considering the creative storage in that amount of square footage...feels really cozy but super functional like you could actually live there and still have some of your stuff. Some of the entries look like they are staged as if they took everything out for the photo shoot or just the opposite...so cluttered it doesn't look like you could find anywhere to move let alone sit, sleep, etc. This is just perfect...looks lived in but still really put together. Well done!
Smart and stylish use of space!
love it! bookcase stairs are genius.
YES really cool. Love the storage and loft. I don't know how you sleep two people in that bed but good for you!
Love that the bed is at the same height as the top shelf in the closet. An amazing DIY! Love the book shelf stairs too. And the light steaming in through the windows!
❤❤❤
too dark for me personally but I LOVE that staircase to your loft bed.
Wooo!!! Julie and Eric!!! Your place is lovely. I love the headboard, the cute little cat, and the herb garden, and the wonderful counter space! -ev :)
Love this! It kind of feels like a cabin in the woods and it is in Brooklyn! This is the first place on the tours that you can really tell how they live, where they store their clothes and books and get a feel for the layout of the place.
this is truly a small COOL apartment. the double-duty staircase, the adorable lofted bed area, the fantastic closet... i love how everything looks, and i extra-love the efficiency/functionality. it seems like a cozy little cabin retreat.
good work - really nice
Extremely clever!
Gorgeous light! I loved how you mounted the window curtains to accentuate the high ceilings. The sleeping loft solution is ingenious!
Awesome pad Julie! I am also a fan of the piano in the kitchen - I only hope that means one of you plays, while the other cooks!
Okay, so the ingenious bookshelves / stairs are just perfect! I also love the exposed brick and the beautiful light in your place. Love it!
This! <3 <3 <3
I want to live in your apartment! The sleeping loft is amazing!
So cute!!!!!! Well done!!
Wow! The amount of work you put into this space is amazing. It is so well thought out. I'm impressed, particularly with the amount of storage you were able to work into the small square footage. Great job!
great! i love the bookcase shelves
Great use of space! I would love to see how you made the bookshelf/stairs.
@bibliovore well put! you expressed exactly what I was feeling!
@bibliovore wrote: Those STAIRS! Those stairs those stairs those stairs! And a piano in the kitchen! And an indoor garden, and storage, and YAY!
Kudos on fantastic use of your space.
Love your place! Similar colors w/brick in our little house; definitely admire the bookshelf/stairs and loft bed set up.
One of the best uses of space that I've ever seen!!
I never would have believed that you could fit a PIANO in a 410 sq ft space where two people live. Genius! When you throw in the working fire place, I am coloured completely green with envy!!!
I absolutely ADORE this apartment. The brick is so warm and homey.
Very good use of space!
What a great apartment. I bet you love coming home to this apartment-- which is all that really matters!
Julie & Eric,
What a lovely and lived-in space! I'm dying to know what paint colors you have, they're perfect with the brick and light warm wood. Throw us a bone?
Love the stair/bookcase. Very clever.
Love this! Someone else said it feels like a cabin in the woods but in Brooklyn -- exactly!
Love the exposed brick, the fireplace, the garden, the stairs, the use of the upper closet as nightstand space. And the colors and textures you used to bring it all together.
What I find most inspiring is the way you both use the space, the each-ness and the together-ness. E.g., I'm guessing that piano is more important to one of you than the other (maybe?). And there it is, cleverly melded in with everything else. Love it.
Just one thing -- there's no picture of your kitchen sink. I understand why you couldn't fit it in, but I bet it's adorable. Darn.
