Your Favorite Thing About Your Outdoor Space: We bought the dock sight-unseen from a guy on Craigslist, but the price included delivery. It was love at first sight, and the dock design is ever changing - sometimes it's a pair of our adirondacks with cheery pillows, but on another day the "furnishings" are a lone beach towel...
Biggest Design Challenge With This Space: Life on a saltwater dock can be rough: high winds, corrosive saltwater and relentless sunshine about 300 days per year. Everything we put in this space has to be heavy-duty or be easily taken down in stormy weather. We learned this lesson the hard way, and have had to hop in the kayak to rescue a stray outdoor cushion or two.
Tips for Creating a Great Small Outdoor Space: Outdoors is the perfect place to be funky, to be be mismatched, and to kick off your flip flops. A great way to get that unmatched look is to reuse things from other parts of our home. The bistro set from our front porch can serve double duty when used for waterfront dining on the backyard dock. A swimsuit coverup (the orange sarong) will happily moonlight as a tablecloth.
Thanks, Julie, and good luck!
