Lately I've been eyeing a particular neon tipped black and white striped rug that has been making the rounds on the design blogs, so I was thrilled when Katie Rodgers of Paper Fashion featured a quick and easy DIY version on her site.
By adding paint to the more affordable Olin version from Crate & Barrel, she recreated the popular Kira-chp version on a budget.
From Katie:
I died over this rug when I saw it a few weeks ago! As you know, I'm a neon fanatic, so obviously I had to find a way to make it happen (it's originally over $400). Sure enough, I found a cheap and easy way to make this rug possible!I used a Crate & Barrel striped runner, and simply painted both ending white stripes with neon acrylic (durable and wash proof) with a normal large brush. I used flouro pink and flouro red for the stripes. No need to use water with these, especially since you want a nice solid coating.

Sprout Side Table
Great DIY idea for adding color! If I were handy, then I'd be tempted to paint bits of neon here and there all over my home.
What a great little project! Thank you for sharing. It's hard to imagine spending the dough on the original knowing that it's not going to be in style forever...I lived through the 80's :).
Great post. I've hacked rugs with paint many a time (even welcome mats). It's any easy & cost efficient project
@stacie: I'm all about budget ideas and would never shell out the dough for the 'original' (ahem) but why does it matter if something is *in style* if you love it?.
*an* - not 'any' - God save me from the grammar police!
@Discerning, Just commenting that I loved the budget project, especially for something that is a trend...and will go out of style. I'm by no means trying to judge how people spend their money on design. If someone loves the original and they have the cash for it - more power to them!
