We've come full-circle. When we were kids, our Mothers' Day gifts were always handmade, and therefore personal, frugal and one-of-a-kind. After years of gift certificates, dinners, flowers and earrings, we're once again looking at gifts we make ourselves from supplies we have on hand: i.e. grout and extra buttons.
Cathie Filian (along with Steve Picaenza) has a how-to on her blog for revamping an old frame and a clay planter.

The pot is gorgeous - I am going to put this is my crafting file!
I love this idea as well. The pot looks amazing and I think you could also do a really cute frame as well. Definitely being added to my DIY list!
I made four of these as gifts for mothers day. It was such a fun project and nobody believed that I actually made it. It looked straight out of a magazine!
