Name: Karen Morgan, gluten-free chef and author, and 8-year-old son Leo
Location: Downtown — Austin, Texas
Size: 996 square feet
Years lived in: Owned, 3 years
Karen Morgan has made a name for herself in the gluten-free baking world as the owner of virtual bakeshop Blackbird Bakery, the author of a cookbook of the same name, and the host of tons of gluten-free events and workshops. Her gluten-free treats and comfort foods are sure to make your mouth water, but her gorgeous, compact apartment she shares with her son Leo will too!
Karen's personality is kind and friendly, immediately making you feel at home and welcome, quite similar to her apartment's cozy style. A perfect mix of casual and interesting, her apartment sports plenty of sassy, cool details, from fun punches of art to unique light fixtures and comfy but sleek furniture pieces.
When Karen moved in three years ago, the space already had great bones and beautiful, urban-feeling materials. She got rid of the claustrophobic drop ceiling and painted the floors a fresh white. Though she laments her choice of paint — it has chipped heavily through the years — we didn't notice the chips so much as how soft and grounded the entire space felt. Other smart choices were futuristic light fixtures and doors that save a lot of space by opening in two directions. Flooded with light from a wall of windows that overlooks downtown, this place really feels so wonderfully urban and homey.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Eclectic Modern.
Inspiration: I love to mix antiques with modern pieces to add a little warm sensuality to the otherwise stark austerity that the modernist movement is so known for. Works of art and color are also a huge inspiration for me. From paintings to photographs to sculptures. No space is complete without some sort of art.
Favorite Element: I love my doors! I have a barn door and two pocket doors, and the rest of the doors are on hinges that allow the doors to open in both directions; every single one of them is a huge space saver.
Biggest Challenge: The white painted floors; they weren't properly sealed when I finished the remodel, so anytime I drop a hairpin, it chips. Talk about a lesson in patience.
What Friends Say: Everyone is surprised when they walk in the door, because the building I live in is very non-descript. The hallways look like they are right out of "Being John Malkovich," so I always imagine that they are expecting to see drop ceilings, drab carpet, and really bad office furniture.
Biggest Embarrassment: Hmm, that's a tough one. Am I boring if I say my white painted floors again? I honestly can't think of anything else that I find embarrassing. Actually, come to think of it, my condo is right next to the building's trash chute, so whenever someone from the tenth floor throws out a big bag of trash, it sounds like a body is falling through the walls. I've had more than a few guests jump when it happens.
Favorite DIY element: Organizing my pantry! Since I'm a gluten-free pastry chef, I have to have enough room for the 10+ flours that I bake with, on top of the usual fare, so my pantry is bigger than the closet in my bedroom, and it's still a tight squeeze. And oh my god I have more pans than shoes!
Biggest Indulgence: My bed, my couch and my kitchen table.
Best Advice: Find a mattress you don't want to get out of, a couch that calls your name and a kitchen table that echoes your ideas about gatherings.

White Enamel Flatwa...
Curious how your back holds up standing for so many hours baking on concrete?
Adore the ceilings. The kitchen is oddly medical.
I like how everything works together and the clean aesthetic overall. The bits of drama and personal touches are quiet -- it feels like a comfortable place to live. The bathrooms are good.
@THORNDALE , I have old back injuries and concrete floors in my work room. I have never noticed my floors to bother my back or legs. Sometimes my feet get cold but that's what slippers are for.
To clarify, my back injuries are in my body, not my work room. ;)
Karen... I think your home is spectacular! Well done!!
Delicious indeed!
the white floors are great, it keeps the overall look fresh and clean, and not cluttered (as a lot of other "eclectic-chic" apartments tend to look). I really want to do it in my apartment, as I love the look of seamless white flooring, but don't ave enough money for white hardwood flooring.
A couple of questions: Is it easy to clean just as regular concrete? does the color chip when you wash it? Thanks!
Where is the couch from? It looks very comfortable.
LOL! Yes, my kitchen is rather medical because the stainless cabinet is an old dental cabinet. But I've always also considered my kitchen to be my lab, so it makes sense that I went full on clinical. Heheh.
It's known in the chef-ing world that the first thing to go after standing for long hours are your knees and back. For me, it's my back. Concrete is merciless.
If you paint your floors, you need to seal it with epoxy so it won't chip. It wasn't able to because the fumes were too intense to use on my building.
The couch is from Design Within Reach from about a million years ago, so I doubt they still have it. I've had it for over ten years, so it's totally broken in!
Glad you all like! I call it the little white box.
I am in love with your ceilings. You have a very neat space!
Great remodel. It reminds me of this Houston apartment that was in Dwell, yet with more warmth:

Love the place! This may be an odd comment/question, but who makes the low, one-piece toilet--the one with the blue stump table next to it in the photo?
@DESIGNSTEIN---not a strange question at all! It's a Toto!
Nice ceilings and light / space. Seems much larger. Love the kitchen -- chic and fun.Lots of nice touches, a great tour of a great space.
What is your backsplash made of? It's beautiful. ( again, what an elegant kitchen !!)
@JESS L.---the ceilings are sealed with a buffed wax finish!
@KASSGOOD the backsplash is made of bevelled subway tiles with black grout.
delicious-ly perfect!!!! the sputnik-y fixture juxtaposed with that concrete ceiling... SIGH!!!!
I like lots of things about this apartment. The big windows in the main room and their vantage point...makes it look like a treehouse! The dark grout with the subway tile in the first bathroom pic. That the place seems to feel so much bigger than it is. The unfinished ceilings. The little personal things scattered here and there but still no feeling of clutter.
Nice!

I want the mirror above the couch. :) It would be a nice change from the painting I currently have up. Oh and for that matter.. I would take the couch too. Looks very comfy.
stunning.
This is probably the best house/apartment tour in the past 4 years.
"A little too masculine for the owner, I think."
@comfortseeker - What does this mean? Why is the owner not supposed to have a masculine home?
Awesome space, the owner suppose to opt for raw/polished concrete without painting them. BTW, Murakami's book 1Q84 spotted at the top of the stacked books
Thank you for leaving the concrete plain. To me it looks fabulous...
I love the "Bus Stop" movie poster. Nice home!
The aesthetic is perfection. Thanks for sharing your space with us.
A very handsome apartment!
I love this. It has so many built-ins for a modern space. And even with all the concrete and glass, it's not cold at all.
@ComfortSeeker: Since the owner oversaw the remodel I am confident that it does indeed represent her and her style. That the decor does not comport with your antiquated beliefs about gender is irrelevant.
Beautiful space!
oh my god i love this! the juxtapositions of textures are so great. i have to ask- where is the blue stump in the bathroom from and the wood bed frame (the one in the room with the books to the left, the white cubenightstand, and the blk pillows)? thanks!!
Sometimes these sorts of homes feel a bit like a repurposed multi-story carpark, but this is very much a home.
I have a history of plantar fasciitis and concrete floors are my nemesis. I hope that the owner gets lots of comfortable shoes and slippers as gifts for the holidays.
It's amazing. Beautiful. Thought I didn't like black leather couches -- silly me.
Karen, your place is great and your advice "find a couch that calls your name" is absolutely my motto, too! I even gave a name to my couch: "Sophie" derived from sofa...So we can call each other...
@redisedentgeek---the mirror is from Crate and Barrel about five years ago, but I just looked at their site and couldn't find it---I'm sure you could find a similar one pretty easily, though. Good luck!
@Noni---Living in a very small space kinda demands organization and when nobody is looking, the floors and kitchen counter are covered with Legos and Leo's art supplies---
@laurenfromchicago---did you survive the storms there yesterday? The blue table in my bathroom is from a little store called Area in Houston, Texas. http://www.luckymag.com/shopping/stores/guides/houston/neighborhoods/kirby_drive_area_rice_village/area. I loved the color so much I had to have it---it's one of my favorite colors of blue.
@laurnefromchicago---sorry I didn't mention this a second ago---the bed is from Wildflower here in Austin---http://wildflowerorganics.com/home.php?cat=83
Love, love, love your home - and Austin! ;) any chance you have a source for the concrete torso on your kitchen counter? I'm kinda obsessed with it since seeing it ...
Thx for sharing your home!
@attygreen13---it's one of my favorite pieces!!! I got it at Uncommon Objects---one of my favorite places to shop. http://www.uncommonobjects.com/
LOVE it!! and the pieces you've chosen are perfect. i also love that blue table in the bathroom. also like how the guest/day bed works with your office.
I love this and it is the look I am aiming for in my place. Though my place does not have those awesome high ceilings. Though I must admit everytime I point out design like this to my friends they always tell me, well it looks really masculine. But I still love it. Good job.
Karen, you are a delicious genius in every way. I'm jealous that my kiddo gets to come play here. Next time I'm going to join him!
You have a beautiful home! I love all the white, especially the white floors.
It's home full of personality and I think it's very well done!
There's so many elements of your space that I'd like to incorporate into my own...thanks for sharing!
Gorgeous human skull collection! Noticed that one cookbook is conspicuously absent from your shelves, The Commonsense Kitchen, by Tom Hudgens. Shameless plug for my best friend's book, but a skull girl would love it. Adore your place, perfect to come home to after work. Salut!
Awesome!
Great to see an Austin home at AT that looks so different then the crafty, repurposed, clever vintage homes you typically cover in that city. Although I am more of a vintage type of person, I do appreciate this tour. I enjoyed the brightness of the place.
Thank you, Karen!! Yea, haha, I was driving when that storm hit but it wasn't too big a deal. In Chicago we're used to weird weather shenanigans :) Although as you probably heard Lolla had to be evacuated. Bummer!
The whole time I was going through the tour I was thinking...how can I get her out of her house and move in..hmmmm...LOL!....Ahhhhh...I love this!
Someone said in one of the post that it's to masculine for the owner (that would be you)...to me, this is a daring space...and it shows how daring you are...a business owner, a author, a mom and still a woman..you go! Good Job on the house!
What a great job you have done! I love the entire space and everything about this tour. It's very classic looking and I like the way the rawness of the architecture compliments the classic look. Kudos for being smart to choose easy finishes to keep clean too. Being a single mother, baker and author I'm sure life keeps you so busy it was important to design the space to be as low to no maintenance as possible. I've lived in my loft with painted cement floors now for 17 years and was manic about the paint chipping for my first two years finding myself repainting the floor a different color every 6 months. However, that got old real quick and I decided to just let the paint on the floor do what it was going to do. I've always kept the floor very clean and when paint chips or peels I clean it up and am enjoying how it keeps evolving. So, now 15 years later I can't tell you how often friends, guests and clients compliment me on the floors "patina" and want to know how or what I did to distress the floor making it look so unique. Don't worry about those areas where the paint comes loose or chips. Embrace it, it is what it is so enjoy it and tell people the floor chipping and peeling was intentional from the beginning!
One question, the blue stool or table in the bathroom is from where? I love it! Oh, what a lucky kid your boy is to have a mom who buys the best lego kits and the skull collection is awesome too. Your place rocks!
Well done Karen. I love the blending of the warm and cold textures and tones. The warmness of the woods and the more modern, cool appeal of the stained concrete are very eye catching. I do agree with other comments though, the kitchen does feel oddly medical, borderline too sterile. But it is a very unique, beautiful space overall.
