The light in our apartment is spectacular, bright for the majority of the day and warm. The sunlight allows us to keep our walls white without it feeling cold, a great backdrop for art and photography. Pops of color and pattern in objects, art and linens bring character and warmth to the apartment. The ceilings are high and it is quite open so it feels fluid and spacious. We really like the original doors, sinks and bath and have stripped them down or left them unfinished intentionally, exposing natural details and imperfections. Under 10 layers of linoleum we discovered these beautiful natural wood floors, after re-finishing, they soon became one of our favorite features.

Avoid clutter and only keep things you really like.
Great lighting is really important. White or light colored walls bounce natural light and open up the space during the day. Art adds color and can be used to divide or section off a large wall. In the evening I avoid overhead lighting and use lamps to create a more intimate feeling. As a lamp designer I think lamps are also interesting objects that can add color, texture and pattern to any space.
In the kitchen use a small fridge under the counter, it makes a big difference.
