More color for April! Another find of the past few months has been Kate Henri pillows and rugs. Walking past the Kate Henri booth at the Gift Fair, I HAD to stop and take pics. I loved the color and felt that her designs were more artistic and original than most of what I had seen there. I recently tracked Robyn Berg (aka Kate Henri) down at her home in Brooklyn....
Robyn started her textile career in Italy, working for a textile design studio and moved back to the US, where she worked in fashion before being inspired by a trip to Mexico.
"I took a trip down to Mexico to visit friends and to work with a ceramic artist on some pottery. While I was down there my friends introduced me to a family of weavers so I designed a rug and some pillows. Upon my return to NYC an architect friend asked if she could get a rug hence Kate Henri was born."
Named after her grandparents, who filled her life "with handmade needlepoint pillows, rugs for my dollhouse, crocheted hangers, and beaded flowers," Robyn's business took off and is now based one her love of handmade designs and her commitment to supporting local artisans.
Her current collection is all handwoven using 100% organic wool and natural dyes (she is working on getting official organic certification from Mexico) by a group of woman weavers she helped to organize. Her goal is to work with traditional artisans from around the world to create environmentally sound products. In May, Robyn is going to Ghana to work with a women's cooperative on a line of Batik fabrics.
Most of her line is available on buildanest.com, a microfinance organization (25% of the proceeds got to co-ops). Her website will be open for orders upon her return from Ghana. You can reach Robyn directly for questions, additional colors, custom orders or wholesale opportunities at 917-582-2240 or firstname.lastname@example.org
