- What I Love About My Small Home:
- Nate and I were hesitant to move into a tiny apartment. He was leaving a roomy loft in North Carolina for my home base in NYC, and I had my heart set on a Lab rescue named George, whose food bin outsized the fridge. But my gut told me the 1911 townhouse with a fireplace and original floors could squeeze us in.
We fit the world in our petite retreat. Carefully curated pieces collected on our journeys pepper our apartment with memories, like the antique Berber door we lugged back from Morocco that anchors the living room.
Family keepsakes balance our far-flung finds. Nathan’s beloved grandma’s lucky horseshoe props up our drafty window. My dad’s bronze andirons add glamour to the rustic fireplace. A trunk salvaged from an estate sale acts as our coffee table and linen storage. Its shipping tags are from 1935—Elvis’s birth year!
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- I wanted a high-functioning livable space — a challenge at 348 ft²! We manage to keep the place feeling fresh by editing, avoiding clutter by allocating a single wall for photos, bold statement pieces, and calming gray paint. Nathan’s special request before moving in was a big couch he could comfortably stretch out on; initially I worried that it would overwhelm the room, but it grounds our place. It all worked out, especially for George, since oftentimes that’s where he hangs!

This is beautiful.
gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. extra points for the rhyming names. we also live in nyc, in a tiny space, and with rhyming names (kim and tim)!
You seriously put me to shame, I have twice the space but looks no where as edited and cohesive as your place. And I agree about a big couch grounds the place, a stretched couch is a must.
I LOVE this place. So well designed, love the color palette, minimalist design and the rustic feel in the middle of NYC - amazing. Best feature is by far the fire place! Oh, and that pup. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.
i LOVE your apartment - well done! the only thing I'd change is the big white arm chair - it seems a little too bulky for that spot. but that is just being really, really picky. overall: gorgeous!
The place looks great, and your writing was a pleasure to read, thanks. Do you miss not having a mantle, I am designing a fireplace with horizontal stone veneer and am on the fence about a mantle?
This is my absolutely favorite one yet. The pieces here are well chosen and functional, and they're all stylish, but this doesn't look like a showroom. It looks so welcoming and comfortable, and it feels like something I could actually achieve in my own home. Perfect!
What a lovely apartment! I wish I could decorate as well as you do; the art is lovely. And what a sweet dog! It's groovy that your apartment allows pets.
Your place looks so warm and welcoming! Love the simplicity and style. George is awesome!
This is so warm and wonderful. Where in the city is it? And have you thought about painting one of the living room walls (or all of them) to highlight the exposed brick? Just a thought - it is beautiful either way.
What I like about your place is that all of the furnishings are scaled to the size of the room and they fit nicely. I also like the clean look and the white walls brightens everything. Good design work.
This is the first entry I've looked at for this contest, and it's setting the bar high. Full of things you love but not cluttered. Yay for George to have a roaring fire to curl up in front of.
Unpretentious and lived-in but also interesting. Love it!
I can't believe how spacious it looks! This is amazing.
Really nice! Love that trunk
I love it, and thank you for including pics of yourselves along with the dog. It's so much nicer this way!
This is such a great apartment that you have made hip and awesome looking! I would love to live there!!!
It looks spacious, not cluttered, very clean. Good design work. I LOVE this place.
I love that little dining room table. I have a tiny space and after seeing your place I am thinking that my 32' square west elm parsons table may be taking up too much prime real estate. Where did you get your table? What are its demensions and how comfortable does it feel to eat there? Gracias!
Is that dog living in your teeny tiny apartment with you?!!!!!!!!!!!
It's the most cohesive and elegantly designed space so far. Bravo! Making me miss NYC.
i'm blushing! thank you all for your warm comments, you definitely made my month! i was a little nervous to share our tiny west village home with the world but am glad i did! to answer your questions:
yes, george is more adorable in person! best dog ever!
gregpgh: the previous renter had a mantle there which would be nice, but after a while i thought the bare exposed brick was clean and simple so we kept it! plus i felt bad drilling into the 100 yr old brick.
jojorocks: the trunk is from 1935, we got it at an estate sale but i bet you can find one on ebay or craigslist. it's about 40"x25" definitely big enough to eat on for two!
let me know if you have any other questions! i'm headed to india tonight for two weeks, but will definitely be checking in here and there to see how we're doing. thanks for sharing!
kate, nate, and georgie
My favorite entry so far! Amazing and Beautiful! Would love to know where you found your couch! :)
This is such a beautifully decorated apartment. Hands down, the best in the running!
The kitchen is right there in one of the pics, it's a counter. It's not a separate room. It's separated by a small island from the living room. Welcome to NYC living. I'm very impressed by the living room, dining room, office, fireplace! I've also had to do an all-in-one but you do it so well with style. I like the porch pic, fitting the space to the inhabitants is hard, and the porch gives a perspective of the type of neighborhood this apartment is in. Thumbs up!
I love what you did with such a small space (even by my european standards). Although it is nice to see picture of you, might have been better to have some of you in the flat, maybe showing a bit more of the bedroom or the kitchen. Just a thought...
Wonderful! Very tightly edited, and the couch looks just fine. And a working fireplace is awesome! (Even though you have no place to store firewood!)
This does not look like 348 sq feet..no way!
Love it. What a lovely space. It seems like a lot of care and thought was put into making this place a cozy home. I think having those large windows makes such a difference in your home. Congrats!
Where did you find that hutch? that your TV is sitting on? Love it!
this is great!
Cosy!
Very inviting! Great job!
Wow you've done so much with what you've got, well done!
I would do anything for this apartment. This is truly beautiful AND in the West Village -- nice job!
Absolutely charming! Good use of space and great decorating. Wish you would have given us a glimpse of the kitchen. Very nice. And bless you for rescuing the sweet dog.
I had to go back and reread that square footage. Great job on making this place seem so spacious!
You've done a super job as this place looks a lot bigger than 348 square feet! Love it all, but George trumps all. That he is a rescue really takes the cake.
I love, love, love this!
Each year in this contest there are a few entries that make me wonder why anyone needs more than 500 square feet to live in. This is one of those -- there's a space set aside for every part of living, and it just feels so easy. Which I know it's not -- the fact that it feels that way is a tribute to Katie and Nate.
I especially love the idea of completely filling up one area of wall with a gallery wall, and the fact that it's the same corner as where the bookshelves are works out so well -- so much "empty" space can be left elsewhere.
Wonderful! Bookmarked.
This reminds me a TON of Joanna Goddard's West Village apartment. Is it in the same building or just a similar layout?

SO. VERY. COZY.
I love how uncluttered your place feels. And yet it's also homey and non-spartan.
1) Where did you find your couch?
2) And your boots?
Checking in from India! Thank you for all the great feedback. I found that couch on Craigslist but it is from Room & Board Hutton in color cloud. I love it, very comfy but not too bulky. And the boots are Frye. We snapped the first couple photos with a wide angle lense which turned out really well. George says thank you for all the love!
It's cosy and warm but if I would do one thing it would be put a mantle or shelving on the fireplace. Also, can't believe you have a medium sized dog. Good thing labs are generally lazy.
It looks like a vey cosy place, inviting, relaxing. I love it !
I love your little office nook! The whole place is beautiful, and George looks like such a happy dog. I like the idea of a "wall of stuff," I might have to use that in my small home.
It is such a nice appartment! Where did You buy the photo at the top of the couch? It really gives the final touch. I also like the lighting.
Thanks for Your picture. It is great to see the owners.
What is what You have on the wall of the tv? Where did you find The tv table? The couch what a great found on Craiglist! Hope You have a great trip to India.
Thank you for all the feedback! To answer recent questions, the photo above the couch is a picture I took on a quiet dirt road in Rwanda in 2009. I love it, gives the place a very calm feel. And above the tv is a silver serving tray my parents received for their wedding in 1970, I found it in the garage a few years ago and found a good spot for it. The tv table is also Craigslist, I searched reclaimed and found that for $200, not bad! thank you for sharing with friends if you like our place, really apreciate it!
Beautiful, simple, elegant, airy, and absolutely well deserving of a house tour and many more pictures. Congratulations
Talented. It's incredible how every single thing fits perfectly. Wow.
Yup!! Love it!! Well done indeed!!
Kate you guys have done an amazing job with the space you have. You would never know it was so teeny tiny. I think a full house tour of your teeny-tiny would be wonderful:) Hint, hint AT.
This is gorgeous!
How big is that little table in the corner of your living room next to the fireplace (with the 2 chairs)? Was it another CL find? I love it!
Thanks!
This apartment is perfection, it's not an teeny-tiny space it's a home. You can really see all the thought that went into making it a functional space. I'm inspired!
Gorgeous, especially the bedroom. Love the white furniture.
We would love to do a house tour (would rather win this)but would definitely be up for that! Jojorocks, that table is a butcher block hand me down from my mom from the 70s, will let you know if I see anything similar and will measure it when I'm back from my India trip!
Gorgeous use of space! I envy your working fireplace. Though I'm entering my apartment, I think you should totally win!
What a GREAT place! Excellent use of space and style. :-)
This apartment is ridiculous on the inside with West Village, NYC on the outside! What a set up you have!
Just perfect !
Hi Kate,
Thanks for the answers. I´d love a house tour of your home.
Have a lovely time in India.
My favorite apartment out of all the entries submitted so far.

Great apartment! Can't believe there are 3 of you in there!
Great apartment, great furniture, great art and great dog! You are an inspiration to us all...less is more!
Good luck guys! xoxo nick, gil and charlie
It works.
I love your apartment, Katie! It is such a beautiful space - and I love the stories behind everything. Such an adorable fiance in that desk nook to boot!! Love you both lots (and George too) xoxo
It's simple with a neat, clean, modern look, but so warm, homey, thoughtful, and inviting! Like each piece has it's own history and story, but they all work together perfectly:) Just beautiful beautiful beautiful!!!!!
wow two people and a lab! good usage of the space.
Great job! I think this amazing place deserves the win!!!
Thank you all for your kind comments, we love our place too! Ana Elena: we'd be happy to do a house tour, fun idea.
I love how you made use of every inch of space! I also love the windows, the lighting, the fireplace, and the study nook. What a dreamy apartment!
Beautiful, cozy, comfortable, space! Floor plan is awesome. When I see a place like this it makes me a believer you don't have to compromise esthetics when living in a small home.
wow! =)
huge number of votes and you deserve it. The apartment is really charming.
Love the large mirror to enlarge the space and light. Also, the photo wall is a great idea to display everything while still keeping the sense of space and calm. Very well done!
Love it! So charming and spacious.
However, correct me if I'm crazy - given the dimensions of the space, it looks like this apartment falls more into the Tiny category at 500+ sqft?
Nope, i wish! Wide angle lens makes it look roomy!
Hi! I can't seem to favorite this space, which is fab. I have confirmed my account twice. Yikes what do I do nxt?
Your bracelet will look so good in this place- wont take up much room
The furniture is appropriate to the spce. The colors are work together well. good job.
Laura India: you just made me laugh. Click on the heart below my writeup and "favorite", did that work? Xx
Oooph finally. I had to get that confirmation email back from the mag and it let me. Now I will move onto sam's vote. Hope you r enjoying Rajasthan!
Beautiful and comfortable. I really dig the little door on the wall. At least I think that's what it is.
Thanks Dave! That is an old Berber door I found on the streets of Morocco. It weighs about 100lb!
love the great trunk as a coffee table and the unique touches from your travels that really make it look special!
GREAT DOG!!!!
Great apartment!
great dog indeed! pictures don't do him justice!
OMORIALA: just looked up joanna's apartment and take that as a serious compliment. her place is beautiful--thank you for putting me in touch with her blog!
This is probably my favorite entry. What a great layout, and in the West Village, wow!
Go Kate & Nate :)
LOVE LOVE LOVE! I hope this one wins!
thank you, everyone! let me know if you have any other questions about the apartment. most of the pieces we've collected from travel, hand-me-down, and of course, craiglist! thanks for all the great comments.
What a place
What an amazing apartment! So well put together, but even more important, so welcoming and homey. It's so nice seeing a home that is not only beautifully designed and decorated, but also actually looks like someone lives there. Well done!
I really like your apartment! I've been focusing on my own entry but thought I'd slip this favorite in under the wire. Also, your dog is SO adorable.
