What I Love About My Small Home:
I love our kitchen, which I got to design and gut renovate. It has plenty of countertop space for cooking and prepping, and I designed one side of our galley kitchen to wrap around the wall into the living room and serve as a four-person table. Having the kitchen open into the living room makes for a great entertaining space, where we have hosted as many as 15 guests at a seated meal.

Our balcony is also a favorite feature of our small home. When we bought our apartment, the balcony was a bare concrete slab with peeling paint, but we added wood pavers, a bistro table, lounge chairs, and plants. I also built a light wall with string lights and a vintage metal Coca Cola sign that provides enough light for dining al fresco after dark.
Three of My Best Tips and Tricks for Creating a Successful Small Space::
(1) Creating "zones" is an important trick for making a small space functional. You don't always need walls to designate use. Our living room also functions as an office, and the kitchen even encroaches into the footprint of the living room. (2) Convertible or multi-use furniture is key to maximizing your small space. Our coffee table pops up to full height, and its leaves open up to become a full dining table that seats 8. We also have several storage units that we use as side tables, including hampers with solid tops and pull-out fronts. (3) Use every nook and cranny for storage. We really wanted a king size bed, but we couldn't fit night stands on either side for books, phones, glasses, etc. We got the bed anyway and built a headboard behind it out of two 8" wide x 30" tall shelving units and a long ledge that we stained to match. We use the ledge for lights, tissues, and water, and we store small items around the sides on the shelves.
