Name: Kathryn, Finn, Emmeth and Roan
Location: Oak Park, IL
Size: 1,600 sq ft
Years lived in: 9 years; owned
Fixing up a century-old bungalow is not always easy—especially when it seems that the former owners had a love of all that was sickly pink—but Kathryn and her family have managed to "design around" plenty of nooks, crannies, narrow rooms, storage shortages, and low ceilings to create a home that's perfect for their fun-loving family.
The first thing that you see upon entering the home is a curvy, tufted, white-legged sofa that's been reupholstered in a modern, gray, floral fabric. For me, this item immediately captured the family's style: traditional, soothing elements with a funky, fun edge. For example, the family room is home to a playful herringbone rug whose busy-ness is tempered by a wall of soft, flowing curtains and neutral, nature-inspired decorative objects. The office is filled with artwork and bold graphics, but the classic lines of the accents and accessories, the soft color palette, and the natural wood of the desk ground the space, giving it a light, comfortable feel. In short, the whole home strikes an admirable balance between cozy familiarity and buoyant creativity.
In the attic, the master and kids' rooms are laid out in an open, loft-style arrangement, but the clever use of wardrobes and a reading nook on Emmeth's side and a yellow barn door on Roan's side help the spaces feel separated and private. The kids' rooms were recently renovated, and Kathryn gave both of them the chance to decide how their rooms should look and feel. Roan, the inventor of the family, responded that he wanted "circuits, gears, rainbows, and really green," and Emmeth, who loves fairies and fantasy, gave only the mandate, "Purple." With these somewhat difficult guidelines, Kathryn managed to turn both nooks into bright, playful spaces that suit both kids' personalities to a T, while still offering places to read, invent, do homework, and play. (See more of Emmeth's Attic Nook here.)
This is a busy, imaginative family. Kathryn, the education director for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, also blogs and does some freelance design, and Finn, who works full-time, lends his spare time and handyman skills to home renovations and DIY projects. Add two dynamic children (one of whom is home-schooled), and you have a recipe for a full plate. But with all these talents and energies, their home still felt remarkably relaxed. It may have required a lot of work-arounds over the years, but there's no question that this house is now home to a family who, while constantly on-the-go, knows how to appreciate it to the fullest.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: Hmmm, eclectic mid-century-ish?
Inspiration: A ridiculous number of blogs, Dwell, House & Home, Room and Board, West Elm
Favorite Element: The gray couch is still a big favorite and the kitchen wallpaper of course.
Biggest Challenge: The narrow rooms (only 10 feet wide) and complete lack of level anywhere.
What Friends Say: "Where did you find this?"
Biggest Embarrassment: Nothing is finished, we get things to the point where they are no longer hideous and just move on to the next big project. There are still a lot of places where we need to finish projects, such as rooms that lack baseboard, drywall holes over the stairs, a former roof leak in the dining room. It's all a work in progress.
Proudest DIY: The barn door and steel bed we upholstered for a new look. And the dining room light.
Biggest Indulgence: The kitchen wallpaper.
Best Advice: Experiment and take risks. It's just furnishings; you can always sell them if they don't work. Paint is cheap and walls aren't always permanent.
Dream Sources: Jayson Home and Garden, DWR, Modernica, estate sales. Most of those pieces simply won't fit in my home though, which makes it easier.

Sprout Side Table
This is my favorite home AT has covered yet! It's design elements are great and it looks like the kids can take full advantage of the space. Beautiful!
Loving this tour! I see so many things I want I will be looking at this tour more times for sure.
The idea of those desks with the stools is EXACTLY what I was thinking to do here in my home office! I am excited, thank you guys.
I like it. Color choices, textures.
And it's "believable", meaning it's not so staged that I can't see you living in it.
Color, pattern and texture run so smoothly throughout the house
Very nice
Love the desk and settee
Sorry - Not sure it makes sense to me .....
I absolutely love this house - it feels homey, warm and usable.
That's so sweet. Thank you!
Thank you!
I love all the geekiness on display, like the periodic table of the elements and the fairy collection on the window. I wonder if there was a conscious effort to ensure the number of slides in this tour was 42. :)
Lovely, real yet well-designed. I'd like to live there!
looks like a warm, welcoming home you can live in, and not just a pretty place right out of a catalog!
this tour makes me realize that I spend way too much time looking at home decor...I know where 90% of those items came from - or at least drew inspiration from. Because of this, the design element looks too common to me.
Did you cut up a copy of the very hungry caterpillar to make the art in the main photo? I love it!
Ha! No, that's a collage of our daughter's pre-school paintings. It really does look like the VHC though.
I love this tour! Such a great mix of "down to earth" items and high end items. Love the colors, the textures and attention to detail! Great home and very cute family!
I LOVE THIS HOUSE. Great job guys. Love the design that looks so functional and great for a family. Really love the idea of a table/desk space in a large front window - great use of space + who doesn't love working at a window. Thanks!
I'll second that this is my favorite house tour yet. I feel like the family is very well expressed in their space. I love it. I feel like we could be friends. :) Great job!
Very nice house! I like the fact that I can tell where a lot of the items are from. It helps to show me that you can have a nice looking house by picking the right commercially available items (I've always wondered if that Ikea fabric would look good on a chair or sofa). I like the wood shelving you created with the silver wall mount brackets. It gives the feel of a MCM shelving unit without the expense.
The only thing I don't think fits with the rest of the awesome style is the kitchen (sorry). It feels a little thrown together with the stove exposed on the end and the fridge just sitting there. It would have been nice if it had a cabinet overtop and side panels to match the rest of the lower cabinets. The wallpaper is pretty though!
Great house again :)
Love, love, love this. It's the PERFECT use of a unique space. I was starting to think it was too perfect until I saw there was a space for the children's art and room for them to play. This had to have taken a great deal of vision and planning. I love the living room. The office space is so practical! The kitchen is a functional luxury. Every single detail is SO THOUGHTFUL . There is no wasted space. I can't say enough great things about this place. Just lovely. Great job Kathryn & Finn.
The kitchen drives me nuts too :) But until we can save up enough to make structural changes (there's a staircase three feet from that stove) I've made it as nice as possible.
Thank you. (and most of the time it's far, far from perfect :)
I'm sure we could :)
Kathryn, those 2 desks in the living room I assume are the campaign desks from world market?
are they sturdy to be a serious desk. I might consider 2 and use as a corner desk.
thank you
They are the campaign console table, which has been discontinued. Narrower than the desk. Very sturdy though, my six year old climbs on them far too often.
thanks I just noticed the desks are only 24 " deep might be too narrow for me , too bad .
more searching to do..
While I agree this does feel like 'the house the internet built', I think it is a great example of how internet design school can elevate beyond what would be there otherwise. Great discipline with the recurring gray and yellow! My favorite juxtapositions are the calendar on the wall near the campaign desk and the teal chandelier in the bathroom. The play room is a surprise, it's huge! I live in an old bungalow and uh...this house is immense in comparison! This family feels like it tried very hard, and succeeded, at escaping whatever the norm is around them. Sympathies on the kitchen woes!
I love the unexpectedness of that oh-so-elegant wallpaper in the kitchen and the overall concept and practice of "designing around" oddities, quirks and flaws. That is what most of us have to do and probably always will have to do. Fun and inspiring to see it done so effectively.Covet those oak with green leather or vinyl family heirloom chairs at the desks!
Second (or third?) to those praising the effective use of mass market items. Most of us can't afford or don't even like designer stuff and vintage and antiques are in limited supply. Part of the charm of this house is the way that the new items have been blended with their antique and vintage items or own creations. This is the way it has to work for people of real means , especially if they're raising kids.
Have to say I agree with you. Some of the design choices are puzzling but one thing I think shines through is the amount of love in this house.
This tour really made me smile, and I personally don't see any puzzling design choices. I agree the kitchen wallpaper is excellent! I'm very impressed with everything, especially since the decor has to hold up to 2 kids--I don't have that limitation, and yet I like a lot of your stuff more than mine!
i really like this. it's practical in a great way. i think my favorite spots are the kitchen and dining area. where is the shelf above the stove from? and also, what is that print that is near your teapot and teas?
i like the personality in this place, and it shows you have a great family.
That is one awesome basement!
how wonderful that a family can live like this, so clean and organized. really wonderful! basement is my FAV!
Cute family pic (Finn looks particularly enthused ... ), and the living room's still my favorite! Congrats!
Cool house - you've packed a whole lot in but it works really well. Just curious - is that a magnetic spice rack in the kitchen?.
Nice. I really like the fabric on the couch in the living room. Did you reupholster it yourself? I also like the fabric in the bedroom, but don't know about having the same fabric in both places. Think I would have picked a different fabric for the bedroom, but in a grey tone as it looks great with the yellow door. Love that you did the upholstery with the table, though I wonder how well that works with kids. Even for me, I still think I need something I can wipe down.
Love your advice about if it doesn't work you can always sell it. Yes. Really a very nice space. Good job.
adore it... awesome looking house, awesome looking family
Very cool space - love it!
Wonder if the cute kitty tries to play with whatever is in the cage in the back of the basement. :) hehe
It's lovely.
The shelf is from Ikea, at least 10 years ago. The print is by Lisa Congdon from etsy.
It is, magnetic tins on a steel board.
@ repressed
Don't panic. I get it.
Thanks for the laugh.
Really love this house! Looks lived in and very well put together. Beautiful!!!! Everything looks great!
Too much IKEA furniture for my taste, although the general style and feel of the home is very nice.
Only 1600 sq feet? Thought the place was much bigger! Loved it! m
Adorable. Clever use of every square inch.
love love love this house!!! this is totally my kind of look...way to go!
i hope you haven't already answered this but where did you get those origami-looking owl figurines?? i adore those guys!
I love it. It looks like people live there and enjoy it! I love the kitchen walls and the purple headboard/bed set!
Also, especially impressed to see a copy of Qwirkle. That's awesome :)
I have to echo the postings about how fabulous your basement/playroom is -- so organized, so useable, so relaxed-looking. I also love the paint job on your daughter's dresser! I had that same set of furniture growing up in the white limed-walnut with gold trim version, and I've never been able to imagine enjoying the pieces until now. Beautiful home you have created!
The little girl's room is really pretty. Beautiful bedding and colors.
personality personality personality !!! so much to see i can tell you probably have the urge to re arrange things on occasion its a sickness lol !!! loved it :)
Thank you. Those are from CB2.
@marshmellows
I thought the exact same thing!
Love the black and white flower painting above the dresser in the living room. Where did you find it?
I love this tour! What a great combination of color and pattern, and that yellow barn door is awesome!
Thanks! I made it.
Love it, totally shines with personality. kudos on doing all that and homeschooling. :)
Good job, especially considering the challenging proportions (eaved rooms, low ceilings). Not sure about having wallpaper in the kitchen, though, especially next to the stove.
I love this house tour so much! It is realistic, a bit unexpected and so creative. I love that your home isn't that sleek, perfected showroom home. I love the color pallet.
Fantastic marble run. I can't believe no one has commented on it. And, I disagree with the (few) haters. It's a fun house, and I think you did a great job making it fun and accessible for your family.
Really warm, pretty and real. Soft non-trendy colors & less chic doodad clutter than most AT home tours, while looking lived-in & comfy. Gorgeous non-pretentious exterior shot. So nice. Thumbs up.
Thanks for sharing a new color palette with us.
My favorite piece is the thrift store couch with IKEA fabric.
Love it.
Warm & cozy, I could move in and be very happy!!
What I love about this home is that it is well-designed yet looks cozy and lived in. Great balance. Great job!
I would LOVE to know where you got that canvas periodic table in your basement. My boyfriend is a chemist and we've been looking for something along those lines to decorate our house!
That's from Land of Nod: http://www.landofnod.com/all-wall-art/kids-room-decor/periodic-table-periodic-chairs-not-included/f8257
cute family, cute home! i like the bathroom and even seeing some of the things that are unfinished. this looks like a real family that values design but doesnt labor over it. i like that its not too "stylized".
Perfection.
Have to agree 100% with the kitchen. There seems to have been a lot of effort put into the rest of the house but the kitchen looks like it is just a bunch of components thrown together in hopes they go well.
