I can totally empathize with Katie's dilemma: you need a home office, but the only viable space is the dining room (in my case I had to convert a closet into a home office, while my better half converted the dining room table into her desk). But Katie didn't just decide to work in her formal dining room, but fully convert it into a home office with enviable personality reflecting her love of color and her family...
After a year in our home, we realized that we used our formal dining room a grand total of five times. With two small children, we were not in a formal season of life, but what we did need was a place to work on projects and puzzles.
I dreamed of a brightly colored space where I could blog and work on my freelancing projects. I envisioned a room that was a little more quirky and creative than the rest of our home, which is of a more traditional style.
The best part of turning our dining room into a home office was that we did not have to go out and purchase a desk—our table fit our needs perfectly! If you are going to use a dining table as a workspace, I do recommend fitting it with a glass top first. It does not cost much money and will protect the table.
The kids like to sit on the bench and work on school projects. When I write, I set up an external monitor and keyboard for my laptop. We have planned parties, completed craft projects, and built elaborate puzzles in this space. And when I say "we", I mean "they"—I am hopeless at puzzles. Turning our dining room into a crafting space/home office was an inexpensive way to get the most use for the space!

Apostrophe in headline is in wrong place!
Looks great! I love the idea of the open frame with smaller pictures inside. Are they tacked/taped directly to the wall?
Dining rooms make great offices even if you still use them for dining also. Place a secretary cabinet on a wall, and use that to house your desktop, printer and/or laptop etc. The dining table makes great credenza style surface space to spread out information, and when you're dining, the secretary closes up and hides all the office stuff.
How do you know this doesn't belong to many Katies...?
Photos need to be in focus.
Apostrophes and photos aside, this is a wonderful example of what thinking "out of the box" can achieve. Too often usable space is wasted due to preconceived ideas of its use. Glad to see you have a joyful area for all of you to share!
Very pretty space. I like that it looks like it could still function as a dining room - assuming the chairs weren't Craiglisted! Aside from that one woven trunk, what I don't see (and am seeking myself), is great looking, dining room-appropriate storage for office gear, files, etc.
Not everyone who works from home has files of needs office supplies. She's a blogger so I don't see her having too many papers to store or records to keep.
Please tell me the brand and Color of paint. It's beautiful!
I'm with Mcgdesigner, would love to know the color of that paint. I'd love to have it in my bedroom.
So simple. So beautiful. It is very functional and gorgeous.
I am with everyone else, love the color.
The open frame came out of a total fail of a DIY project. I was attempting to add cork board to the frame and it went all terribly awry. The cork board is attached with a double stick wall mounting and the frames are hung with small nails. Thank you for the lovely compliment!
Thank you! The color is Benjamin Moore's Florida Keys Blue 2050-40--it is from Pottery Barn's 2012 Color Wheel.
You are telling me! Taking the setting off auto and learning how to use a camera in manual mode is not easy, but I am working on it. It is a learning process.
Thank you so much! I slip covered the chairs and am actually using them in the kitchen now. The blogger below is correct that I don't keep a lot of files, but we found a cherry wood filing cabinet at JC Penney for my husband's study--it looks more like a piece of furniture than office storage. HTH!
A gaggle of Katies!
No, just one. ;)
That was supposed to say 2010.

She's fantastic! Her kids' rooms are just wonderful.
