Katja's Colorful, Patterned Patio

My Great Outdoors

Name: Katja Kromann
Location: Orange County, California

When she moved in four years ago, one of the things Katja instantly loved about her new home was the big patio in the back yard. After finishing a remodel inside (which included a picture window to the yard), it was time to turn her attention to the patio.

Katja, quite the DIYer, spray painted her white, wicker chairs a vibrant turquoise and sewed new covers for the seat cushions. In fact, she hand-covered nearly all the pillows and cushions in the lounge area — masterfully mixing color and pattern to liven it up.

Around the patio, she added forever plants and succulents and defined the three separate areas with outdoor rugs.  In order not to overwhelm, she picked patterns with only two colors (one of them a neutral) so they would work separately but also as a group.

Katja says, "We love our outdoor space and use it all the time. We sometimes debate if we even need the house behind it."

Thanks, Katja!
