Kanye West and his rather large ego can make him quite controversial, but we do enjoy his passion and eye for design and architecture. His current Los Angeles home is up for sale and as we were scrolling through the interior photos of the home, we were drawn to the minimalist design. We have discussed when minimalism works best before and it is a tricky aesthetic to master.

Much of contemporary pop culture is rooted in the idea of modern design. We personally enjoy the mixing of design styles. Although the Elroy art, Humberto Campana's stuffed-animal chair, and Murakami pillows add an element of color, personality, and youth to a sometimes stark minimalist interior, we would prefer to see more Andy Warhol and Murakami artwork to achieve a fresh, but luxurious consistency.
Do you think pop art as a design inspiration works well in an architectural minimalist interior? We are fortunate to have such passionate and educated readers that add depth to our topics and content and we always look forward to your insight and perspective.

Howard Butcher Bloc...
pleasantly surprised to see his home's design/style.
minimalist wouldn't have been my first assumption, but it's beautiful, and looks extremely clean and sophisticated!
how appropriate... it's cold and calculating
Love the sneakers, Kanye has got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Umm Hmmm!
I'd rather live here than the Design by Nine place. Sans the weird stuffed animal chair. But plus their view.
I want to hate it, but I can't...
Imma let you finish, but Hunt Slonem has the best house.
a rapper that buys art. how much do i love this.
This bolsters my conviction that Kanye West can, indeed, be saved from himself.
I don't want to be negative but...
That stuffed animal chair - whaa?
I was so looking forward to this - Kanye used to be two steps ahead of most in his field, style-wise too. This whole look is going to date in like, two minutes.
I'd love to see a celebrity's house knowing they actually styled it themselves. You only have to look at Miranda July's beautiful pad to see someone with a genuine love of interiors and whose home reflects their art and personality.
This is just flippin' Trendy101.
Mr West, you flunked.
First, it's on the market.
Second, rapper buying art? That's overkill decoration look-at-me art; the art is great, the taste range is simple.
The house is decidely minimalist; the interior design is not.
Don't get me wrong; the art is chip. But it also lookes like a checklist, not a love.
Exactly what Id expect from an Art major college drop out turned uber music producer turned MC turn video director.
(These pics are like 5 years old right?)
If Kanye actually had to design it himself I seriously doubt it would look that good.
I believe his girlfiend ( not the ex- fiancee pictured) once quipped that she couldnt understand how 'his favorite color is bone'.
I think the minimalism/pop is truly him.
@MCBfly His ex fiancee, a fashion designer helped him.
I think the home is both lovely and truly him..I mean look at the heap of LV suitcases!
While I love his first 3 albums, and I am feeling the minimalist thing here, I don't like pop art, furs, the corny stuffed animals, or his attitude.
Wow, he's got almost as many kicks as me! Yeah right, he's probably got that pic X 20.
Anyway seeing his various websites over the years, his album art, videos (all of which he had a large hand in designing/directing) and his style of dress I can't say I'm surprised at anything in those pictures.
So THAT'S where he sits and thinks about how to be a doper person. I always wondered.
stuffed animals? weird...i like the marble and the front door!
I'm not sure what I thought his home would be like, but suffice it to say, only the rows and rows of tennis shoes wasn't startling to me. That, somehow, I'd have envisioned.
The rest of it....surprising.
Soooo nice... I could totally envision this as my bachelorette pad (minus the stuffed animals).
Celebrity homes bore me. it's usually just their interior designer's vision mixed with their approval. this kind of post is not why i visit AP!
The wierdo has a pretty cool house minus all the FAO shwartzy toys.
A rapper who buys art? And then someone seconds the "surprise"? WTF is that supposed to mean? What is that about? It smacks a little you know what. Is he supposed to decorate his home with velvet paintings of malt liquor cans. Or maybe posters of Al Pacino as Scarface. I don't want to pick a fight but, really... come on...think about it.
The only thing that surprises me is the Jetson's picture and the stuffed animals. What's with that. I absolutely love the door!! Of course it's his designer's vision. But I'm sure he had his input. Marcia, I always look forward to what you're going to post next.
I think it makes sense. Is that an actual fish tank by the tub? (South Park, anyone?)
I knew he likes fish sticks.
Not sure what I like the best about this post on Kanye's place. The pics -- or, the readers' comments!
I'm gonna try to work in "... FAO shwartzy toys," into a conversation today."
I mean...his good taste? Or his interior designer's?
Why do so many commentators think they know him well enough to be surprised by his home? You all must be some pretty serious fans of his! Obviously there's serious fans of hip-hop too!!! Just when you thought you knew all there was to know about hip-hop artist one of them surprises you by collecting art!!! WOW!!!
Anyway, yes, I do think pop art works as a design inspiration in a minimalist interior. Thanks for asking!
He's certainly kept in touch with his Inner Child...
In my humble opinion, pop art and minimalism are a classic combination. I love the art he chose. That said, I think Kanye's pad has some very lovely elements and some very tacky elements...to each his own!
I'm in love with the bathroom
His artwork makes me want to pour a bowl of coco-crispies and watch the A-Team (that's a good thing)
I do love that sculptural wood chair that is next to the stump table. Simple and organic in feel.
i expected a bit more lux incorporated to his home style but i guess for a bachelor its decent. i luv his music despite his i dont give a F*** attitude i mean he keeps it real he doesnt censor his thoughts and i respect him for being true to his self and not to what people expect him to be!
i must say what is up with the big suprise that a hip hop artist enjoys and buys art? are we not cultured enough to love rap/ hip-hop and other art forms as well. open your mind people.
#notcool
I really love the metal and wood bar stools - can anyone identify them?
