- What I Love About My Small Home:
- I love finding ways to make our small home fun and functional for myself and my four year old son, Kahlil. Friends and family enjoying hanging out in our bright, airy loft built on top of our neighbor’s three car garage. The hardwood floors, a huge plus, make cleaning up after a spunky preschooler a breeze. Located across the street from a beautiful marina, park, restaurants, comic book and record store, it truly is a perfect place for this dynamic duo.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- While the rest of the space is one big open room, the bedroom is separated by a bulky semi-wall with big cubby holes on each side meant for entertainment centers. They seemed pointless until I started using them for what small spaces need most –- storage! With only one closet in the entire loft, I converted one cubby hole into a pantry and the other into a second closet. The great thing about the semi-wall is that there are windows at the top to keep the air and light flowing through as well as built in shelves that we use for more storage.

So... a bedroom shared with a 4 yr old? My gad, I'd go insane. I NEED, I mean NEED, my own space. Sharing a room would make having overnight visitors (say, a boyfriend?) impossible, no? That being said- it's an adorable place!
love your space. So much light, so happy. I want to move in! :)
Totally adorable and a very clever use of space.
Kay you're space is amazing! It would totally work for me and my two boys! It's simple, stylish, and definitely functional! Great job! Hope you win! =)
Good Luck Kay !!! LOVE the pictures !!! Wanna come over to our place and help me figure out how to fit 5 ppl in a 2bd/2ba apartment? HAHA!
Very creative and quiet savy. Love everything that you have done and I especially love how you used the space in your kitchen. Seeing the way you designed your house makes me want to revamp my house. Fabulous job!!
Thanks for all your kinds words, everyone! It's a constant work in progress keeping it neat (sort of) and fun. How do you guys like my spelling skills? --------> "Kahlil's Play ARE" HAHA!
Love it K! Great job! Now come decorate my house lol
I love that cubby wall and what you've done with it...very cute apartment! Good for you for having a nice space for you and your son (and for giving him a fun place to play)! I love that it looks like both of you live there!!
I like the decals on the fridge too :)
Me likey! Good luck :)
Nice apartment! I like how you keep an area for your son to play in and still manage to keep it stylish.
Kay! I love the place. Thanks for tagging me to your little apartment page! LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!! -Karen
what a clever and tasteful way to maximize your living space! i adore what you've done to the place! great work, kay!!
I grew up sharing a room with my single mother. Sometimes parents have to make sacrifices, you did a good job given your situation......whatever it is. It looks like a kid lives there, but in a good way.
Aww, thank you so much, OWLGIRLO! That's really what it's about.. Working with what you have. TONS of inspiration comes from sacrifice. I appreciate your kind words! High 5 to you and your mom!! :)
High 5 to all single parents :)
Love it!
Great job Kay! Good Luck!
Straight out of an IKEA catalog, that's how good you are! This place has spunk and says you all over it! Good luck mama!
Your place looks AWESOME!! Even if I didn't know you lived there I could see you living there (even if there wasn't a giant "K" in front of a picture of you above the TV) . It looks very "you." Great job!
I love the eclectic, homey feel of your place. I just have to ask...where did you get the decal you used on the fridge? I'd love to copy that idea!
We've been to this always comfy feeling FUN loft w/my family of 5 and it's accomodated for us in addtion to other families over! Kay has done such an awesome job organizing and decorating her home for her and her son! I have yet to have her come organize our apt of 3 bedrooms, will need to utilize her blessed skills!
this loft has such a comforting vibe
Hope our vote was counted, we favorited!
Thank you guys so much for the awesome comments. @DUSTY3863, thanks!! I got the decals from Etsy.com. They have TONS of interesting ones. Great way to decorate walls without painting or putting holes in them. It's my modern twist on the giant, wooden spoon and fork that so many Filipino families have :)
@melarlodi lol, I know right? We always talk about different ways to divide our room somehow, from simply putting a clothesline up and hanging a sheet (I can just see him under there with a flash light reading books) to a craftier, more thought out divider, but so far we've managed fine. PS anything's possible since he has an early bedtime :) But I'm thinking in a year or so, he will definitely need his own room LOL. Thanks for the comment!!
Love it....good luck Kay!!! =]
Awesome Kay! It surely is fun and FUNCTIONAL, and organize and neat. Like your color selections. Wow, talent.
Your use of space has me feeling bad abut all of our wasted space at home. I love what you've done, especially because both you and your son's personalities shine in your home. Good luck!
Good Luck Kay!! I hope you win!! ; )
nice one!
Good luck!!
EW its nice
This apartment has Kay written all over it. Small, but super stylish, as bright as your personality yet smart and functional. Good job, Kay, love the apartment!
Perfect space for you both... Very cool. Hope you WIN!
Haha! I knew you were Filipino the moment i saw the rice cooker :)
Really love your apartment. Got a lot of ideas especially now a baby is on the way. We're living in a smaller place by the way. I just hope i can organize as well as you have for our small family..
