We first learned about the "taxi pillow" after visiting Carrie's home for her Apartment Therapy House Tour. The pillow called out to us because of its bright red, luminescent quality (and the fact that it was unique and round). Carrie gave us a little backstory on this fun find and we also rounded up a few for inspiration.
Apparently, all the taxis in Thailand have one of these pillows in their car. Carrie tells us that over there, taxis are like traveling temples (decorated further with Buddha's, Thai script written by a monk--and the pillows round out the enclosed sanctuary of the car). The sentiments act as a sign of good luck and safe travels. You can read more about these beautiful pillows here from a blog about taxi drivers of Bangkok. Bright and fun, these round pillows would bring a bit of color and life into any room in the house.

I love these pillows - I'm always on the hunt for them at flea markets. Does anyone have a DIY link - I'd like to learn how to make them.
Funny. My aunts used to decorate with these in the 70s, early 80s and I'm not nearly Thai. They take me back...
I love those pillows, especially on a bed or on a sofa with very clean lines.
They are like a Zafu cushion used for meditation just more decorative.
I remember making these at school when I was a kid. I can't remember enough to pass on instructions, but it's all to do with marking squares on the fabric and sewing the squares corner-to-corner. Anyway, it's much simpler than you might imagine. I seem to recall the hard part was pulling it all together into the button in the centre.
I have a purple velvet one on my bed! Matches my purple velvet tufted headboard.
I have an orange one from urbanoutfitters. While its super cute, its very poorly made (button wasn't sewn on right, falling apart on edges, etc). So DON'T but one from there!
I love these round pillows! I just scored a silver charcoal one from JCPenney for $10 (was $50) the other day! It's now sitting on my bed looking pretty. :)
I just bought one the other day at Hobby Lobby, of all places. Only $10, too.
The red pillow on my bed was made by my family in Thailand. These pillows are firm and well made. They are usually made with a metallic diamond pattern fabric or Thai silk. I see plenty of tufted round pillows around, but they aren't the same quality.
I got mine from Urban Outfitters for $20, I believe...mine's holding up just fine. I don't know why, but it is the PERFECT pillow no matter what I use it for: laying, leaning, as a book cushion...
