I prefer to have the windows themselves and the incoming sunlight stand out more than my choice of fabric. (If it were practical, I'd just leave my windows bare.) For rooms that don't get a lot of light, the white is bright on its own. If you want something more adjustable, blinds and roman shades made of natural materials add texture and a little color without competing with their surroundings.
For inexpensive white curtains, try using twin sheets or shopping IKEA. I'm happy with my bamboo blinds (Image 7) from Overstock.com and have been curious about the options from Pearl River.

My guess is Minka Aire.
What's funny is how hard it can be in some areas to find white curtians and real bamboo blinds. Beige, khaki, green , red, little palm tree prints...but no white. When I lived in Miami, it was a constant struggle. Where there is ikea, there is hope, but for those who live in the suburbs, it can be tough! So silly! Who prefers red tab top curtains over white ones??!! Same with slipcovers and shower curtains. Even Target doesn't always carry these things in a pure, classic plain white.
Does anyone know where I can find that little table and chairs in image 7 by Leah Moss? I have a tiny apt and have been on the lookout for the a table that is the right fit. Thanks.
@jenniferbnyc - the chairs are most likely vintage (mid century era), not sure about the table. If you like the style of the chairs you could try craigslist or eBay. That was a heavily copied design, so there are a lot of them out there.

My first job was selling custom drapes in Miami & Ft. Lauderdale in 1969. Over exposure at that young age to velvet swags etc. left me with an abiding love for simple blinds, shutters and bare windows.
Jenniferbnyc - Image 7 is my apartment as it looked last May. The chairs were an inexpensive Craigslist find, and Chrisdy is right that you can find something similar pretty easily. The table was from a vintage shop in PA and had hairpin legs. I covered the dingy, veneered wood top with oilcloth fabric.
There's just something about white curtains blowing in the breeze that takes my breath away. I just put some in my family room and kitchen and wonder why I didn't do it sooner.
I replaced a tragic set of 1980s vintage vertical blinds in my bedroom with simple white curtains from Ikea. TOTALLY transformed the bedroom, for the better, of course!

i ended up using off-white canvas painter's drop cloths for my large 8'x5' windows. perfect solution.

I just hung white sheers in my dining room. Absolutely beautiful, soft and pretty. They have transformed the space. I got them from JCPenney.
