A new book by graphic artist Jordan Crane, from McMullen's (a children's imprint from McSweeney's), employs a nifty trick that falls somewhere between Hypercolor shirt technology, and scratch and sniff stickers. Each page features hidden illustrations that are only revealed after rubbing sections of heat-sensitive disappearing ink.
In Keep Our Secrets, two kids make their way through a rowdy adult party (think New Year's Eve), and as they pass through each room a girl discloses to a boy a world of strange secrets hidden all around them. "There's a big ol' black dog, lives in the piano." "Miss Horvath is two people." "One of Mr. Vesper's legs is a python."
Eventually the pair find their way to the quietness of the backyard, where they climb a tree and the girl shares a final secret. "You can hear with your eyes. You can find new secrets. But only if you listen... very... close."
Older readers will pick up on the subtext of two kids on their own trying to make sense of the confusing world of adults, but all ages will marvel at the clever drawings exposed beneath the disappearing ink.
The thermal ink does take a fair amount of energetic rubbing to reveal the hidden images, but works like a charm if you utilize a blow dryer, exposing an entire page with a few sweeps of hot air.

I pre-ordered three of these books (two to give as gifts) with much excitement and I cannot tell you how disappointed I am. I usually love anything published by McSweeney's but this book does not deliver.
They are awful! It is a huge understatement to say it takes a fair amount of rubbing to get the hidden messages to appear. It took my husband and I on average 2-3 minutes of rubbing one small area to get anything to appear legibly. Show me a child who wants to wait 2-3 minutes to uncover each small area of text/pictures when there are 5-6 small areas per page?!
The hair dryer does work, but c'mon!! It's not exactly convenient or easy to read to your child with hair dryer in hand or safe to let your little ones use a hair dryer by themselves. I guess for a one-time novelty type thing, this book is okay. But, I feel it was such a waste of money and will not be giving them out as gifts.
But it says on the cover "to be read in a whisper". Doesn't that imply you're supposed to breathe on it? I'd imagine your breath would uncover the "secrets" more than rubbing with your fingers. But I don't have the books. Just an observation from the pictures. :)
