Q: I just bought my very first condo in down town Jersey City. It is in a brownstone converted building so it is a tad bit narrow. The previous owners left their huge leather couch behind because it did not fit thru the door to remove. It is very heavy and a great quality leather just huge and kind of traditional. My style tends more towards the modern. I am going to be repainting, but need direction and advise on if I should keep this couch or curb it somehow.

I know the rug is small ( I was playing with colors). The red is not as bad as it seems though I am pretty sure it is going to leave. Any ideas or suggestions for my space would be greatly appreciated.

How did they get the couch in??? I would curb the couch..or sale it!
Sell the couch.
Yeah, artsylady, I was thinking the same thing. If they got the dang thing in why couldn't they get it out?
Parting with a good quality piece of furniture would be painful for me, but it you really don't think you can make it work then sell it. Just figure out how to get it out before you put it on Craigslist and make sure that any removal expenses (crane?) are incurred by the buyer.
Why not keep it?
Just because the sofa is traditional doesn't mean that you can't mix with modern pieces as well - As a plus, it's not costing you anything to keep it.
Just be aware of scale with your other pieces, stay away from more leather and you'll be fine.
Leather is horrible- it sticks to the skin in warm weather and is not very cosy.
It is the central part of the room- you might always hate it. Ditch it if you can afford it. From the pictures it looks rather ugly.
Keep it. It's easier than trying to figure out how to get it out. If leather is a problem in summer, have a quality slip cover made for it in canvas or something neutral.
"Leather is horrible- it sticks to the skin in warm weather and is not very cosy."
You've just described vinyl and bicast leather.
Real leather doesn't do that.
Maybe you can move it out by taking the legs off -- then replace them once it's gone, of course.
If you don't hate it, though, it's a free sofa for the time being. I'd paint the wall behind it a darker color and the end walls lighter, to help ground it in that space. Bigger rug, as you already know, bigger glass coffee table (since the space it tight -- the table needs to extend most of the way to the ends of the sofa, but also not take up a lot of visual space. Another option might be a narrow wooden bench as a coffee table, that can double as seating.)
Uggg!!! Curb it!!!
Instead of selling it, since you didn't buy it, I would consider donating it to a charity thift store.
Or donate it to a community organization that could really use it, but make them come and get it.
yeah-- that was kind of lazypants on their part.
If you have a couch you like or the funds to get something, I wouldn't feel the need to incorporate it into your look if it's not for you. I love love the chandelier and some more modern furniture would make a lovely mix. The leather sofa looks like a contemporary take on traditional (and big), so the contrast wouldn't be as nice.
Goodness I hope you don't have to hire professionals to get that thing out-- though they'll probably know better than anyone how to do it.
slaughter that big cow :)
"If they got the dang thing in why couldn't they get it out?"
In the last decade, lots of people in NYC purchased oversized sofas and called in professionals to take the piece apart to get it in the place and reassemble it within the home.
It's not a cheap operation and it's likely that the former owner wanted a new sofa to go in their new home - so didn't bother with the expense of the same operation to have it removed.
If that's how it got in the house, there's not going to be a way to have it removed without having it dismantled again - in which case it's pretty much trash unless you call in the professionals again.
If it is going to be an eye sore for you, I say post a "FREE to he/she that can remove" in the Free section on Craigslist. That way - if it is destroyed on the way out, you don't have a buyer who is upset.
I'm not a fan of leather so sell it cheap on craigslist or something - then the people who buy it can figure out how to move it.
I would leave it, do all your re-painting, buy all your stuff and see if it really stands out - then make your decision
i'm torn too. i had leather and hated it. it was easy to keep clean but it's not comfortable to wake up from a nap and peel yourself off the couch (LITERALLY!)
i would say try to sell it on craigslist. if you're unable to, maybe list it for free on craigslist (i'm a firm believer in CL if you didn't notice).
if not...try a different room configuration and make it a secondary seating space and bring a sofa in your style to accent it. at least you aren't throwing it in a landfill to rot for eternity.
and in my experience with a black leather couch almost EXACTLY like that one. vintage/modern throw pillows go a LONG WAY to bring it into the style you're looking for.
good luck with your decision!
Well, you haven't said in your comment if *you* find the couch comfortable to sit on. If you don't, then out it goes! With a saw if necessary.
If you do find it comfortable, I think you could find a way to work it into your decor, someway, somehow.
"That way - if it is destroyed on the way out, you don't have a buyer who is upset."
Perhaps your time isn't valuable - but not everyone else's is...
...wasting people's time and efforts with a hand out that's impossible for them to collect on is just wrong.
Bed bugs.
Wait until you find something you really love. A quality-made(if it is) leather couch big enough to sleep on is kind of nice. In the summer, dust lightly with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
yeah, I say let it grow on you for a while... you'll know if you like it in a month or so, and you can always get rid of it later..
The last tenants left behind all the curtains in my new place. The ones in the bedroom were out on move in day (had a musty, old lady smell)... a month later, I've decided to keep the curtains in the den... only to move them to the bedroom.
If you like the couch otherwise, and you're just worried about going outside the lines of modern design, I say keep it. I really like the way a mix of modern and traditional looks, personally. If it's comfy and in good shape, just get it some really edgy, modern throw pillows and paint the legs lime green or something.
well, on my opinion I dont really like leather couches because theyre cold and very uncomfortable but you should keep it for a while and see what you like about it and what you dont.
throw pillows, nice art on the walls, paint... it's a good quality couch for free, so i would try living with it for a while before making harsh decisions...
Let it go. Life is too short to hold onto things you don't love.
Especially. when you use them every day I lived without a sofa for almost a year and guess what the world didn't end.
You'll see a piece that sucks the breath from your body, makes your gut clench and that you keep thinking about. That's the piece. Selling that, perfect for someone else, sofa only gets you there quicker.
But first, figure out how it makes it out your door, then make a buck, put the money away. You are gonna need it when you find the "right" sofa.
It has been 18 months and I still smile when I come down the hall and see mine.
Congratulations on your first home! Nothing as fun like decorating your own place.
YES, as a few other suggested, first paint the walls and then decide whether you would like to keep the couch or curb it. I have a similar couch in my living room and have still been able to keep the design contemporary/modern by just choosing appropriate paint color and accessories. My only concern is whether it is too big for the space (since you mentioned the room being kind of narrow).

Thanks for your comments all. It is a very comfy sofa and in great shape. I was never a leather fan but I have to admit it is very dog friendly. To remove it I would have to call the couch dr. no fun paying the $250.00, so I may have to work with it. Any suggestions on wall paint for this room. It gets great light.
I have been struggling with the same thing myself. Your living space is almost identical, down to the bulk head, to mine. A black leather sofa set was donated to me when I moved into my condo and I wasnt sure if it was my style or if it looked way too big for the space. I decided budget wouldnt let me get a new set in the near future so I kept an ecclectic decor and painted the walls to suit and I think it's working out quite nicely. If you havent found pieces that you must have I say keep it and work with it. I think you could work it! As for paint colour well that all depends on what feel you want in your livingroom. I painted the bulkhead wall a rich purple and have 4 throw pillows in similar rich colours. I chose a neutral sand colour (the colour in the stitching of the throws) for the rest of the walls to lighten the space up. This warms the space but still keeps it neutral and open. Good luck!
Not a fan of leather couches but, yes, you can work with it, in the meantime. Just get rid of the red paint and pick something light :) Good luck!
