Shaw's Original Fir...
These are beautiful colours!
Love the warm tones in this room!
I like the red walls on either side of your fireplace! Beautiful use of color! :)
Very nice
This room is so beautiful, beachy but cozy at the same time. Tell us about your dog!!!
I love bright and cozy feel....really beautiful. I am drooling over the coffee tables!! I have been looking for a coffee table "pair". Feel like sharing your info :) The fact that you used red on your walls and it looks this fab, makes you a pretty gutsy, and very stylish, decorator.
Hi @Lilylover90028. I have the same coffee table only in nickel base. They are by Johnathan Adler.
Thanks so much!
Where is the rug from?!
This feels warm and homey, something that seems to be missing from many.
Thanks for the positive feedback, beachy and cozy is exactly what we are going for! Chachi is our poodle-rottweiler-pekinese-australian sheepdog mix (aka a MUTT!), he's about two (never know for sure because he's a rescue) and he's got a huge personality! I really had to refrain from putting him in all five pictures, it wasn't easy!
We ordered the rug online ... took a bit of a risk having never seen it in person but we really love it and it's held up well. Here's a link to it: http://www.rugs-direct.com/ShopDetail/Details/136058/KASOriental/Chateau/Sofia/WedgewoodMocha3624
That's right - these coffee tables were our big splurge for this room, we love them!
the beach pictures are it!
Yay! Great jobs with the pics
Love your choice of where to put the red. Love the whole ding busted room, as a matter of fact!
Love the tables!
Love the colour on the ascent wall - very eye-catchin! Goes well with the rest of the furnitures!
Love the warm and inviting colors!
very chic, kellie! Chachi coordinates nicely with the room! xo
Beachy?
I love the balance you were able to achieve between the sharp lines of the tables, lamps, and angles within your focus wall and the natural feel of the beachy accents. Also heart heart heart your puppy! Great work!
I didn't get a beachy feeling with the color choices, but I did with the accessories and the artwork above the sofa. Your home is beautiful and I love your color choices! Gorgeous!
The Room makes me put a smile on my face...... Thank you for the red... Tell you sister I miss in DC but I have always been a California girl.. Sancy
Love it !
Beautiful room! Great balance of warm and inviting and yet still interesting. What is the source of the beach pictures? They're great!
Thanks tmw41! The beach pictures were taken at low tide at a beach in Malibu called "El Matador".
This is now the number one room in a "room for color" contest. Really? The room looks like something out of a Macy's catalog. Nothing wrong with that, of course. But compare the "imagination" that, for instance, Rohde's room (which held the lead for a long time) connoted with this room. Ole Kellie must have a whole lotta friends. Kinda exemplifies the difference between democracy and meritocracy. (This in no way should be interpreted as a comment re political philosopy, where democracy, pace Plato, is really the best we can ever hope to do). Other skeptics may wish to note that Its been "liked" 6 times, "tweeted" 4 times and "pinned" 50 times. Compare these numbers with the other entries in, say, the top six.
Ikeandtina,
Thank you for your opinion. In the spirit of transparency, I do think you should have identified yourself as a contestant in the same category so others have the appropriate context to consider your comments.
Best wishes and good luck.
I (ike) am not a contestant. Tina is. I wrote the comment without her knowledge, and she is now quite upset with me. She believes that negative comments should be kept to oneself. I apologize to her as I write this, but what I said is how I feel.
@ikeandtina - Tina is right.
love the sunburst mirror!
love this room's lighting choices... especially the sofa table lamps
Perfect room with the perfect dog.
Warm and welcoming. Great taste and style.
I have lurked here at AT for a while, but felt compelled to respond to the comment from Ikeandtina! First, I agree wholeheartedly with his comments about this contest. This is a great room, and I don't want to post anything negative about it. It deserves a lot of praise, but there's no way that it should be in FIRST here! Kind of like the controversy over in the dark division about Dana's nursery that has an insurmountable lead. She has an interior design blog. This whole contest is just a popularity contest - who has the most blog readers or friends on Facebook, not who has the best room. I agree with him to look at the number of pins and facebook likes here. This room has been pinned 52 times and Rhode's room has been pinned over 2 THOUSAND times! Yes thousand. And yet this one is in the lead? Seems off to me. But once again, this is a great room and I don't mean any disrespect at all to Kellie.
SamanthaBfly, I agree that this is a popularity competition. Same thing is happening over in the light division right now with my entry Suzanne's Color in Harmony Room. I think the pinterest votes are the most reliable indicator of the best room. The Facebook likes and twitter don't matter because that just represents all of the entrant's friends sharing the link to promote the room. Same thing happened last year in my division. It's just not possible to win on merit until AT changes the rules. Having said that this entry is very good and has some nice elements and deserves to be in the top 5 of it's category.
Did not favorite this entry as I thought the room had too much going on. Agree with other posters who expressed surprise that this was the top vote getter as with entries in the other categories. Perhaps AT needs to rethink its rating system.
My living room was entered in the International Division so I have followed the contest closely this year. Is it always so controversial?
First of all, congratualtions to all the finalists. I voted for a couple, but not all of them and, while they are beautiful rooms, none were my first choice in their category. I did not personally expect to win and was thrilled just to be included in the competition. I felt that there were rooms superior to mine but it was still fun to watch the votes and read the comments.
AT's motives for allowing voting are obvious and I happen to agree with them. It's fun and encourages many people (who are mainly observers) to become engaged and post comments and generally interact with this community. It is also a brilliant way to draw in more readers.
Obviously the Bloggers have an edge but they were well within the rules to advertise on their blogs and wouldn't we all do that if we could? Perhaps if this is a really issue for many readers (and it seems to have hurt some feelings and ruffled some feathers) AT will consider a panel of designer or "expert" judges in the future, while still allowing reader voting and prizes for "Reader's Picks"... Win-win?
I'm not generally drawn to warm rooms but this is truly lovely. Well done. I personally call it 'Seaside Sunset'.
That said, I won't be voting.
Congratulations in making it into the final. In the spirit of fairness I'd like to let you know that at least one of you (the final contestants) is publicly asking people to vote three times for their room (telling people to use email, facebook and twitter). You know who you are. I have asked Apartment Therapy a number of times whether you can vote for a room more than once. They never answered my question and just referred me to the contest page. On the contest page it states:
Contest Schedule
9/24 — Submission Forms open.
10/1 — Selected entries will begin to be posted. Readers may respond by choosing their favorite entries. Readers may mark as many entries as they like as favorites during this period. Readers may mark each entry as a favorite only once.....
I don't know whether this is an official rule or how they would enforce it. Anyway just wanted to let everyone know that this is going on. Can't tell you if it's against the rules to vote 3 times, or even tell you if it's against the rules to tell anyone to vote 3 times. It's a mystery.
FYI to everyone following the contest: There's no mystery! The contest rules are being followed and we have been watching the voting carefully. Thanks very much for your entries, votes and feedback in the comments - we appreciate it and will keep it in mind as we plan future contests.
Janel, see you didn't answer my question again. According to the official rules are you allowed to vote 3 times for a room? YES or NO?
Just wanted to chime in and say that I find it disappointing that people feel the need to post comments regarding the supposed unfairness of the competition on contestant's walls. I applaud all of the those that entered the competition, it is not easy to open your home up to criticism. How about being constructive & actually emailing Apartment Therapy directly instead of posting on contestant's walls?
Hi all,
Just checked back here. "Only once" means just that - once. If you are interested in more detailed info on voting, the best source is the rules section, linked from the contest page.
Congrats on the win Kellie! You have a wonderful, warm and welcoming room. No controversy about that.
xo,
Dana
Wouldn't it be nice if there was another place to comment on your reaction to the contest? The comments were disabled on the finalist and winner posts.
You said it, comicbookheroine. There were definitely comments on the finalist announcement post before they turned them off, too, so I'm sure a lot of responses got lost. It's sad when sites are afraid to let their readers engage in discussion and offer criticism (removing flames and spam is one thing, but this is quite another).
Congrats on winning! Your room is awesome and definitely very warm and inviting! Regardless of any controversy this room rocks and you did a great job.
Kellie, this is a very nice room and well designed, if not to everyone's taste. But I am curious as to why you didn't give credit to the designer who designed this room.
This is the winner? I mean, it's not badly designed, but definitely not worthy of the being the winner.
Who is the designer?
I believe it is Jesssica Ahnert Davis. I stumbled upon this while looking at some design blogs. http://www.nesteaglerock.com/2012/10/apartment-therapy-bright-and-beachy.html
