Kevin bought his Adams Morgan apartment in the summer of 2005 and decorated it fairly slowly over the course of a year or so. Most of the major pieces are vintage originals that he had re-covered (including the Florence Knoll sofa and credenza, the womb settee and the Nelson clocks).
Kevin says, "I definitely recommend going vintage if you have the patience and the money. It can take a while to find things you like, but you usually wind up saving money even after the cost of restoration, and it holds its value well. Plus, the hunt is part of the fun."
It's easy to go over-the-top with iconic MCM pieces, a temptation to which Kevin admits he may have may have fallen prey, but he says "I simply bought what I liked. And it turned out many of them were classics."
Built almost a hundred years ago, the house was converted into condos in the 1980s. Kevin took these photos several years ago. Since that time, Kevin's fiancé Anne has moved in. The next step for them is "getting some original (and more interesting) art on the walls." Currently, there are reproductions on the wall because he didn't feel quite ready to sink major money into art yet, so he bought a couple repros to put up until he find something better. "I think buying art is best done over time as you find things you really appreciate," Kevin explains.

Your furniture is art!! Just gorgeous!
I don't think there are too many MCM pieces at all - it looks great! He picked practical, approachable pieces - things you can actually use and live with. It doesn't end up feeling like a time capsule, either. Very nice! :)
I like how you put a table in front of seating at the bay window. much more inviting than just the seating alone, to know you have a place to put a book, coffee etc.
Delightful!
Lots of nice furniture in a warm house.
thumbs up!
What an amazing place! I adore the bay window and the banister on the stairs. The furniture strikes a perfect balance to me. I also love to see Adams Morgan on AT.
kevin: what paint is that, by the way? brand/color?
Who makes that simple bent metal coffee table?
I've admired these photos on Flickr - a very nice space, made nicer by excellent furniture. I agree that the hunt for vintage pieces is fun and time consuming - and I'm where you are with original art. It takes time, but makes a big difference.
The Saarinen sofa makes me swoon, especially as part of a 2-channel listening area.
Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
Catrin, the paint is Benjamin Moore Chestertown Buff HC9 60 percent.
CPeriodDesign, not sure which coffee table your referring to, but one is the Noguchi Cyclone table and the other is Platner.
Love the two cozy seating areas -- so welcoming!
Most homes with MCM items in the actual mid-20th century never looked as good as homes that incorporate MCM items today ~ trust me, I grew up then. Timeless design is timeless design, and I love what today's generation is doing with MCM, including this fabulous home.
There is never such a thing as too many MCM pieces. It is absolutely amazing! Enjoy!
Love the look and colors-- and am a huge fan of MCM-- but I would have (and going forward, for sure) mix in a few pieces here and there that are decidedly NOT MCM, simply because you're running the risk of beginning to look like a store for all things MCM. I do think MCM pieces tend to look warmer and stand out a little more when smartly mixed with other furniture styles. Use other types of lamps, for instance, or end tables-- and avoid what has now seemingly become the requisite starburst clock-- for anyone who loves MCM. I think it would be much more interesting and inviting if you mixed in other styles and would look less like a storefront for all things MCM.
