My husband thinks having a physical wall calendar at home is an outdated notion, but my son and I use it all the time so I try to pick one that appeals to us both. We mark down upcoming events and I use it to visually show him how much time he has to wait for one of these events to arrive (especially his birthday which is more than 6 months off but inquired about weekly).
The past few years I've ordered an illustrated animal-themed calendar from Sadly Harmless (#8 above) and here are some others I've pulled together in case you're looking for something along these lines.
Another idea is to make your family a photo calendar starring your kids. I make one every year for the grandparents, but it would be fun for my son and I to look at photos of him from when he was a year younger.

Shaw's Original Fir...
Great picks! These are adorable! I think artwork by kids is just so beautiful and pure. So, the first one is my fave. : )
Or, you could go to a Michaels store and buy a "Kids color" calender for a $2 and they could color their own. They have several options. I usually buy a whole stack and then give as gifts to all the kids who come to visit for various events from Thanksgiving through Epiphany. Just an idea for the cash challenged among us.
Those are adorable - I think I want them! I actually bought a blank calendar at Lakeshore Learning. http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C898%2C235&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1354546449239
They sell them individually in the store and it's about $2. We've had fun tracking the day's weather and then coloring the month's page.
This is a catalan limited edition kids calendar: http://www.tresxics.com/calendari-2013/calendari-2013-100.html
They can dress with stikets the drawings of each month.
Thanks for the tip nancip!
We got this sweet one and had fun with it.
@nancip - great idea - thanks!
We made a calendar with family photos year - that was sooo much fun for the kids! They especially loved picking pictures for the cells to mark everyone's birthday. We used this app and had it printed in our local printshop.
