Are you following the New York Times project Kids Draw the News? Each week they ask children to illustrate a news article. This week's topic got my attention, as it hits quite literally close to home for me — the cleaning up of the Gowanus Canal. But it brings up the broader issue of how to raise civic-minded children.
Do you read the paper with your kids? Bring up issues at the dinner table?

Interesting. My cousin couldn't watch the news as a child because all of the negative stuff gave him panic attacks.
i feel like the news is not age appropriate for my kids. Although teaching them about what is happening in the world is great. Remembering in elementary school and I had no idea what "Desert Storm" was and what war they were talking about. I thought war was history not current events. So keeping kids in the dark isn't OK either. But even our local news is too much for little ones to handle. My kids are 4 and 2. Although once they are pre teens I want them to be more aware of news. I think a newspaper is the best option as we dont have to show or tell them all!
