Before there were portable dvd and MP3 players, kids on long road trips were forced to pass the time looking out the car window, reading a book or having actual conversations. If you were really lucky you remembered to grab the atlas out of the trunk and you (quite happily) pored over each state calling out funny place names (Walla Walla!) and quizzing your parents on state capitals. If you prefer your kids unplug a bit on your next trip, consider this four book bundle from Rand McNally (and for less than $15).
If you can't find the at your local book shop, try Rand McNally's online shop.
The books are part of Rand McNally's Backseat Books series. Here's how they describe them:
Are We There Yet? features great on-the-road games, trip-tracking tools (including travel journal pages), mini mysteries, crossword puzzles, road games, and much, much more.
Best Travel Activity Book Ever! features hundreds of coloring activities, dozens of dot-to-dots, lots of mazes, and a ton of other fun games and activities.
Kids' Road Atlas features real road maps, great travel games, state-by-state puzzles, state facts (including the nickname, capital, flower, tree, and bird), an index, and much, much more.
Coast-to-Coast Games travels around the United States by region through National Park puzzles, city games and activities, fun facts and trivia, and much, much more.
You can purchase each book separately (about $3.50) or bundled together ($14). Rand McNally doesn't list appropriate age ranges on their site, but we checked out some parent reviews and the consensus seems to be that they cover a wide range from about age 5 to 13 which is particularly nice for siblings to pass around and share.
