- What do you love about your bedroom?:
- After living with roommates in a windowless bedroom in Chelsea I was desperate for a retreat of my own that was bright, airy, and at the same time cozy. My little studio apartment is perched on the 37th floor of a vintage high-rise, I love being able to lay in bed and watch the boats go down the Hudson River, or watch the storms roll in from the west.
- What are your tips for creating a beautiful, healthy and organized bedroom?
- Simplicity, if you don't need it, get rid of it! Get creative with your storage, and don't settle for what's expected... I'm all about the element of the unexpected.
- In modern homes, bedrooms have become more than just a place to sleep; they can be a retreat, a home office, a library, a relaxation zone. What are some ways you make the most of your bedroom?
- Well, living in a tiny studio my bedroom acts as my home office for my design business, my cafeteria, my living room, my yoga studio, my cocktail lounge, and of course my bedroom. I make the most out of my space by having items that can be used for multiple things.

Beautiful! I love the warm earthy colors with the soft gray on the walls.
Nice and tidy with great pieces.
Love all your clocks!! Love the whole place!
Can I ask where the clock next to the TV was purchased?
Excellent use of space, and style to spare. (lovely lines on that sofa, btw)
Hi! Thank You. The modern clocks are all George Nelson clocks, which can be purchased at the Vitra Store in Meatpacking District! :)
I absolutely love this. A well structured sapce that manages to be both quirky and grown up.
So far, my favorite! I love your room/stuido!
but isn't this actually a house tour? LOL
Super cute! I love this little studio but can't imagine ever to keep it as tidy and neat as Kiel does! The dog is super adorable too (my dog is also a professional photo-bomber!)
Absolutely goregous!
Perfect in every way!
vote, vote.
every bit of it is fantastic.
Mind if I ask where you got the long bookshelf above your desk area? I'm looking for something like that to store dvds.
Hi Nancy - It's actually 2 separate wall cabinets from CB2, they no longer make them but theyre designed to hold TV electronics.... I believe the white version is still in the sale section on their site! Good Luck!
HAHAHAHA!
oh my, I love how your made your space looks so tidy clean and also warm and welcoming. Plus, your dog is sooo cute, such a great model, he is always looking into the camera. =D
Could you tell me where the cuckoo clock is from?
Love your BT!
Wow. I live in a 1BR in Astoria and would gladly trade it in for this studio - I want to live in this building!
I admit, I was hoping they were knock offs from a chain retailer.. $500 from the authorized dealer here in Vancouver is a bit outside of my current clock budget. :)
Thanks for the reply!
19 dollars on Ebay! Then spray painted it Matte Black. :)
The big red pillow on the bed! where is that from?!!
Dope.
I love this space, you accomplished so much and yet it is still warm and inviting. Great job!
It's from Vitra, it's a Maharam pillow and the colors are Orange/Navy - the color reads differently in the photo. It's so comfy!
Small? Check.
Cool? Check.
Oh wait....wrong month!
(I wonder if there's anything in AT's Constitution that says the same entry can't win both contests?)
Someone needs to tell me where those nesting tables came from. They're EXACTLY what I've been looking for!
They're from Vitra as well... lol. They come in a bunch of colors and sizes.
Lovely! I love the pictures over the bed. Can't do it here though. In California it's not advisable to have frames with glass in them hanging over the bed.
Love this space, it's a nice blend of super modern and comfy classic...my cats would love that corrugated cardboard chair. Where did you get those fabulous white tables in front of the couch?
I love this place!! The colors, textures, wall of clocks, and the rest. Fab. Please enter it in Small and Cool later this year.
Love this space, although I don't think I would ever have thought to have put any of it together, and that makes it extra good. And of course, the BT sent this one over the top. (My BT, Posey Jane, sends her regards).
paint colors on the wall?
Benjamin Moore's San Antonio Grey
thanks! been looking for a new color and diggin' your set up
It's perfect. If you're not a designer then you've missed your calling.
This is the first one I have voted for.Very nice. Love everything!
I like the bird! Also, did you make the headboard?
Yeah....I'm stealing some of your ideas. Lovely.
I love how everything isn't in a matching colour. I'm trying to get a similar feel, pulled together but not all bought in the same month with a Pantone book in hand! Really great inspiration. Only wish I could find that paint colour in Australia. Anyone have similar one in dulux, taubmans, British paints?
Wow, just perfect, so so beautifully done, absolutely love it.
Thanks! Yes I made the headboard out of 2 sound reduction panels from an office space.... Ive recovered it a good 5 times haha :)
I also had to vote for this one. Wish a kitchen pic had been snuck into the set. Also like the multi clocks. Glad I saw the paint color as the pics look a little too 'mustard' like to me. How does one have a dog on the 37th floor & get it down and outsize to do it's biz w/o any (yuck) accidents?!
LOOOOOVE IT!! Everything about this is perfect, Kiel. I'm a huge fan of your flawless taste... and of course, of Rufus! Scully sends her love :)
Yes, please! THIS. Also, house tour, house tour! I would LOVE to see the kitchen! I wish I could vote multiple times, this is the best entry I've seen so far. :)
You're too sweet Karina! :)
such a great use of space. my bedroom is teeny and i just got rid of the headboard to save space - i'm definitely going to copy your fabric covered panel idea! will be way cheaper than my current 2 year tolerance of furniture too!
Perfection. I'd like to not only have a full house tour but to nominate this as the winner of the next Small Cool contest, too. :D
Beautiful room!
Hour tour please!!! Love it, and you're totally inspiring me, and I can't wait to get my own place again.
Small cool contest too please!!!
Brilliant!!!
Where is the green end table from next to the sofa? you can barely see it, but its so amazing!
It's made by Moroso. It's available in many colors and sizes. - Thanks!
Love this bedroom! This is the first time I've voted in this contest and it's because your room is so wonderful! If you wouldn't mind sharing, where is the comforter/duvet from? I've been looking for a nice dark gray comforter with no luck!
Super cute! This is the first time I've been motivated to vote so far!
Thank you SO much! The Duvet Cover is from West Elm... purchased recently so they should still have it! :)
this is lovely - serene yet interesting. great job. cute dog, too!
What is that paint colour?
Hello - it's Benjamin Moore's San Antonio Grey
Lovely but I'm glad you don't live in earthquake country! I wouldn't be able to sleep under all that stuff that could fall on my head.
I would be so happy here...even in NYC! :)
Love, love, love. Colors, pieces, furniture placement. Everything. The floating shelves and table combo in the corner is brilliant. It looks great and is a smart solution for space that could easily be wasted. I wish I could have that cardboard chair, but my cat would have a field day with that thing.
And that dog is priceless.
Thank you! Too kind!
I live in 450 sq ft but would gladly trade for your space. Where is that awesome chair from the one that looks like ribbon candy? Ok, I'm off to vote, and vote and vote for this bedroom!
Has this contestant ever entered the Small Cool contest? I recall a lovely studio owned by a designer with very similar configurations but with a black, grey, navy, white palette. It too was stunning.
Hi Spencer, nope I haven't submitted before!
Hello, thank you! the chair is a Frank Gehry chair called "Wiggle" sold at Vitra.
LOVE this room! nice job
Great room! Was wondering where you bought the white quilted blanket. Didn't see that in comments thus far.
This is a wonderful space but it feels more like a house call than a just a bedroom.
There are a lot of clocks for one room. The tic-toc-ing might drive me mad.
It feels like a hip hotel room. I like this entry, overall.
Hello - It's from CB2 :)
Love, love, love! This is just spectacular. Congrats!
Amazing use of the space! It's multifunctional, but not cramped at all. And I'm in love with your doggie! :)
Awesome use of space! very well decorated!
I'm a friend of Kiel, and his dog Rufus' and this apartment fits his personality to a T! Fun, quirky, sleek and unexpected! Good luck Kiel!!! Your killer taste will take you far! - Nate
Your room is pretty, and your little dog too!!! Seriously, simple, elegant and quite lovely. Cannot stop perusing the pics. Thank you for sharing.
I love your place! Very clean, but with verve. Your dog looks very happy with the design as well!

Great use of space, colors, furniture and pet. Just wondering where your closet is or do all your clothes fit in the dresser?
Thank You - Don't worry, as Im a clothes horse, I have a large closet full to the brim next to the kitchen (not pictured)
I hate chevrons, yet I enthusiastically voted for this space. It looks like such a functional little world, yet sumptuous and comfortable. This really IS a retreat! Great work.
What a wonderful place you have! You must enjoy every inch of it every minute you're home. Your pup is adorable! And I love, love, love that Eames House Bird. I wish it weren't out of my budget. But maybe one day I'll splurge. It's quite a piece, and larger than I thought it would be. Does it stand up on those little skinny bird legs? It looks so well-designed, the balance is probably just about perfect.
I love Kiel's style - simple, masculine but homely. This studio makes you think who needs an apartment when you can have one multi-functional space. Good work! Jack Lane, (hellojacklane on Instagram)
Bring on the Small Cool! Great room, Kiel. I love the warmth and the organization - it just seems perfectly perfect. You are a genius at art hanging!
I also love how the dog was wiley enough to make it into every pic. LOL
Where did you get the bed frame? It's simple and just what I have been looking for. Also, cutest Boston Terrier ever!
love furniture's, lighting and all just PERFECT!
I can see that much thought and care was put into the design of this space. Even though it is a studio, it looks very spacious and airy. The placement of the furniture and everything in this room is neat and efficient. Bravo. The Boston Terrier is a ham and adds to the ambiance! Bravo Kiel; beautiful job!
THIS IS THE SHIZ!!! I love everything about your space, particularly your adorable dog and AWESOME headboard. I might have to steal that since it seems very DYIable.....Great job!
Hello - It's from West Elm, and thank you about my dog!
Had to take a return look. This does look full, comfortable, interesting, creative, but not crowded. No wonder it's a top favorite.
Beautiful!
So eclectic. I love it. Very well done.
Amazing place, just my style wish I could afford nicer decor. I voted and hope you win.
Wonderful. Love the graphics on the head board and the pillow. Perfect wall color. Your room is beautifully put together.
Is there a website for your design business?
I came back to vote for this bedroom. There are marvelous entries here, but this one is by far the one that has captured my heart. I did not have any trouble at all making up my mind! For me, this is the winner!
What a great space. Would love to see a house tour of your mini space:) hint, hint AT.
Thank you so much! :) Your comment made my day!
Hi There, not at this time as my corporate job is taking up too much of time, I try to do a few apartments on the side though so if you're in the NYC area please email me kiel@even-kiel.com
Very nice indeed ... sharp satisfying contrasts, full of interesting furniture ... I could just live in this room!
Fantastic use of the space and LOVE your colors.
And who is the canine cutie photobombing most of the pics?
Dont get me wrong, these bedrooms are nice and i like this contest more than the others. Saying that, i must say i like this one. If not for one thing: i am not digging all the girlie bedrooms that are showing up. I feel like someone just dropped me back in time, when I was a single girl in my twenties. sorry. Saying that: this one feels grown up and a little manly which i like.
Thank You!! :) That cutie is my dog Rufus! :)
loving it, especially the coffee table combo
Your apartment is great! If your ever in the Baltimore area and would like to do a weekend swap let me know.

As a Manhattan ex-pat who wants to return but can only afford a studio, you have helped allay my fear! Your home is sublime perfection. Bravo. I only want to see more. A peek at that kitchen? Bathroom? Closet? Mitch mchuich@mac.com
I am so digging this one. Although I am not sure mine would be so neat!! I do love the sofa! Is that a loveseat? Where did you purchase?
Alicia
Thanks Alicia! It's vintage loveseat/settee I scored on Ebay for $300! Was such a steal!
I like the spike clock you have by the TV. Cool and calm room!
I placed my vote for you in the finals. You just have to win this!
WOW Kiel - your bedroom is my fave for so many reasons. It is tastefully decorated with lots of understated pizzazz. I love everything from the bird in the window to the chair, to your pooch's reflection in the mirror (which I almost missed); then there's the duvet, the clocks, the office space. Oh, and did I mention the chair? I get the feeling that you did not have to stretch your imagination too much to come up with this great space. And a view too! You've got my vote.
Amazing space! Warm, inviting, interesting, function....I could go on and on!
Thank You! I'm very hopeful to win as I'm donating the cash portion of the prize to a charity close to my heart!!
Thank You so very much!! I'm very hopeful to win as I'm donating the cash portion of the prize to a charity very close to my heart! This has been such a fun contest to be a part of! -Kiel
Although I did not vote for this room, the dog here gets my vote (and I love the collage)!
I like that his dog is in every picture. :)
This bedroom is so beautiful in every way. I so wish I could put something together like this. It is so well organized and clean lined. We have always had Bostons and they are like art in any photos that include them. Thank you for the beauty of your design.
congrate.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ops...........
congrats...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
Thank you to everyone who voted for me in this contest. As a young professional in NYC trying to build their design business having this opportunity will surely help drive business my way. Myself and my dog Rufus (shown in every pic) were displaced from Hurricane Sandy for 2 months, this upswing in luck is greatly appreciated and welcomed in our life! I plan to give the cash portion of my prize to the Ronald McDonald House where I'm currently involved with a design project. Thank you for your votes, nice comments, and support! xo - Kiel & Ru
Your BT made this a shoo in
Congratulations Kiel and Rufus! Your entry just about reduced my vocabulary to one word--WOW! Everything is exquisitely designed and interesting. I love every well-planned inch of it!
I voted for only you--your design is in a class of its own. Best wishes in what will be a successful career. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.
I agree! Would love to know where the quilt is from...
Wow right back you! Your encouraging comment really made my evening! Thank you so much! :)
The white quilt is from CB2, they still sell it too!
Yea! I voted for your place!! So well-put together and quirky, yet sophisticated. Where did you get that fabulous dresser/cabinet?
Hello and Thank you! The dresser I snagged at a flea market in NYC's East Village. 50 dollars! Total score! :)
YES!!
would you share the room dimensions? I am trying to convince a friend that life in the city will not be the death of her and she just can't believe a studio could be THIS liveable! I was once a blind southerner myself ;)
Hello! The main room as shown in the photos measures 18x16 = 288 square feet. I luckily have a large kitchen/entry not shown in the pictures that makes the space feel much larger!
Congratulations Kiel! Maybe you could show us the kitchen & bathroom in your entry for this year's Small Cool contest? ;-)
