We're on the verge of purchasing a large kilim area rug for our living room. And sure, our current home is old and eclectic and the rug is a perfect fit. But we're buying for life, with hopes of building a small, contemporary home one day. So, will the kilim work? Here's evidence that it will indeed carry over nicely:
These examples showcase kilims in contemporary architecture. They work so well as a warm and textured counterpoint to the white austerity of their surroundings. Even if you aren't living in a contemporary home but want to mix a kilim with modern decor, that works too!

Wow, I could move right into that room with the big mirror. Beautiful.
marble in the kitchen for me is a no.1 NOGO, even in the bathroom.
Nanacyalice, would you mind a roommate? Because that room is pretty much perfect! I have an old magazine (I think it's ELLE from 3 years ago - Jennifer Garner is on the cover) that I have saved because there is a room in it with almost that exact feel and I would love to one day recreate it in my own home. There is nothing I love more (design-wise) than really rustic livable fabrics mixed with big mirrors in comfortable rooms - throw in a fireplace and huge doors that open up to a beautiful garden and I might never leave :)
Without a doubt this combo works - the mix of textures (nubby/natural/woven vs sleek/hard) is a natural fit, especially if you go very large with the rug.
I find that a kilim always works, it bridges traditional with modern.
Yes, a lovely look!! I especially like the kilim on the white floor in the second picture.
Adore the rug in the 1st picture! so pretty!
Yes! And picture 3 - perfection.
A kilim isn't for life. While hand-woven pile carpets can last for decades, flat-weaves wear out much faster. If it's in a heavy traffic area, it could look shabby in 10 years.
Ooh...so happy to see #1 - Canadian House and Home mag's editor Suzanne Dimma's home!! Love.
When I was planning my trip to Turkey I had said I wasn't going to buy a carpet because it wouldn't go in my house (a mix of mid-century and contemporary but not ultra modern) but when I got there I discovered the kilims. I came home with a 4'x6' that I love and I think it looks great with my furniture on my parquet floor! I just wish I'd made the leap and gotten a bigger one!!
