It's week three of the January Cure, and while last week I found myself losing steam, this week I have really started to see results and am getting motivated to see it through (as if having to share my progress with all of you wasn't motivation enough).
Another part of what got me excited for this week is that this is the one where we focus on the bedroom, which gives me an excuse to tackle my closet. I love a well organized closet. Rows of beautiful clothes organized by color and sleeve length… It borders on an obsession.
Day 9: Create a Landing Strip.
I already had a system in place with most of the key elements of a landing strip. The only problem? 90% of the time I just breezed right by it and tossed my stuff wherever, to be dealt with whenever. Which led to conversations like this, "I can't believe that check still hasn't come!" "Oh, honey, I think I saw it. Somewhere…" I added a few key elements to my landing strip: a place to put the mail and a catch-all for the odds and ends floating around in my purse.
Day 10: Work on Your Goal Project.
For my goal project I selected "Buy a few accessories and hang some art to make it feel a little more like home." I already have an entire apartment worth of stuff I really love sitting in a storage unit, so my goal was to find things that went with my stuff as well as the somebody else's stuff that I am actually living with. I also wanted to avoid spending a fortune or duplicating anything I already own. No big deal. Here's how I made out.
I've been checking out a lot of the local thrift shops lately to restock my prop cupboard for food photography. I expanded my search a bit and came up with two milk glass vases and a handful of brass candlesticks in various sizes. I cleaned them all up and now they're sitting pretty. I also discovered a nice quilt tucked away in the guest bedroom closet, laundered it and used it in my room. Finally I picked up a pretty pin tucked pillow to tie the bedroom together. Grand total, under $60, and I'm starting to feel much more at home.
Day 11: Try a Media Fast.
To be honest, I was dreading this one. Normally, I don't usually have too hard of a time unplugging from the outside world, but this week the boyfriend is away on business and it already feels way too quiet around here.
I decided to spend the evening the way that I loved to when I was living on my own in the city. I picked up some bubble bath, a magazine and a bottle of nail polish at the drugstore and had a little spa night. I think I might need to do this more often.
Day 12: Declutter Books and Media.
This is the first one that I found that I truly couldn't participate in. We have a grand total of 5 books in the temporary digs — not much to organize. I decided to follow this post's advice instead and use the time to get my digital life in order by organizing my Pinterest.
Day 13: Weekend Chores: Flowers and Bedroom Cleaning.
I picked up some fuchsia roses for my flowers this week and got to work on my room. Once it was clean and dust free I introduced a few of my finds from Day 10, then reorganized my closet and dresser for a little extra credit.
