We've got a small leak in our ceiling, and thankfully the weather has been fairly dry ever since discovering the noticeable water stains up above. The sloth-like response from our landlord is going to get a swift kick in the butt when we call the housing department, who has already noted the need for repairs. One worry is that mold might take hold, and this seems like a growing worry in homes these days. Toxic mold has been shown to cause a multitude of health detrimental conditions, including the worst of them all, death.
Of course, some people will take advantage by preying on this fear. KNBC investigators put some mold removal companies to the test by wiping a bit of black eye shadow on the bathroom wall to see what these "specialists" would report back. You might want to take a look before investing in such a service (if your room looks like the photo above, one can be assured you need some professional help).

This is why I ALWAYS research a little bit before I call in an expert or before I let them convince me of anything. At the very least a woman with knowledge is scarier.
TIP - practise your poker face. NEVER let them know you actually are scared. Never let them know you want to buy.
Funny story. I went to look at cars with my partner (a push over who takes whatever anyone offers, he hates to bargain). We found one we liked but it had a few dints in the doors. I asked the salesman if we bought the car could they get those taken out. He said no that wasn't possible it was a great price already.
He started to chat to me about work (I was in uniform) and he said he had done contract work for us before. He said he worked for a labour hire company we use, as the manager last year. Big mistake because my Dad was in fact the manager of that labour hire company at that time, and I told him so. You should have seen his face change. HILARIOUS!
"OHHH you are Bryan's daughter?!"
I said, "Yes, now what could we do about these dints and the price was too high because I have looked it up on the internet." The deal (we didn't accept) was that the dints would come out and he would knock 1,800 off the price and throw in a dash & floor mats & seat covers free.
A little knowledge goes a long way.
I wonder if thats what my old apartment looks like by now.
I saw that someone else moved in and it's supposed to rain this weekend. I really hope they fixed the roof. Poor poor new tenant :(
I am new to LA and my Apartment ceiling is leaking.
Do you know what the local laws are about Leaks and Landlords?
I know in some states tenants dont have to pay rent for everyday their roof leaks.
Anyone know what my rights are here in LA?
They do have someone come to repair it, I hear the roofers up there, but they obviously arent actually fixing the problem since it leaked again on Friday. I dont know if there is anything I can do to let them know they need to try a new method/roofing company or something that will work.
Thanks for this post.
Regina, You have tons of rights. Start with this link: http://fairhousingoc.org/landlord.html
They have to fix it. You'll see your specific issue on that link.
Good luck!
