Ana White says she is obsessed with wood. After visiting her blog - well, there's no question. Calling herself a "stay at home Mom with expensive taste and no money," Ana is a self-taught carpenter determined to inspire you to try it yourself. And she's arming you with specific plans, instructions and tips along the way.
If you gaze longingly at beautiful furniture in catalogs like Pottery Barn, West Elm, Land of Nod, etc., but find it all out of your budget - Ana's here for you! She loves all kinds of crafts and hobbies, but while sewing your own pillows might save you a couple of bucks, Ana declares (and rightly so) that learning to build your own furniture will save you thousands.
On her fantastic blog, Knock Off Wood, she shares plans (measurements and basic instructions) for replicating furniture she sees and loves. Some of it she makes for her own family. Others she draws up computer-simulated plans for you to use (and she'd love it if you sent her photos of anything you make from them - check out her Bragging Board).
In addition to full-size furniture, she's made plans for a kids' toy washing machine and dryer, play stove, play fridge, play sink, mailbox and what she calls Grace's Town which includes a grocery market, library, post office, and coffee shop. (Squeal!)
Our hat's off to you, Ana!
[Update: Ana's into more than just kids' furniture, read more about her furniture plans for every room in your house at ATSF.]
(We found Ana via Ucreate where she shared instructions for making simple clip art rails)

It looks like Ana did a knockoff of the chalkboard tree from the Pottery Barn Kids collection, but instructions of the project don't appear on her blog. Am I missing something? I'd love to see how she did it.
thejando, keep looking! That and many others are there - go to projects, then keep hitting "Older" at the bottom of the page until you find the page you want. I just looked through everything, and I have a feeling it's going to be a busy year for furniture building!
My stepfather built my daughter a knock off of the pottery barn bookcase for her first birthday.
It's not an excellent picture of it but you can see it here:

Oh wow ... I spent over an hour on Ana's site and I have a huge list of things to make in 2010! We are definitely going to build the Land of Nod chairs with the storage underneath and one of the kids tables (I can't decide!!!!) for our 3 year old's birthday.
wow, I'm loving this site. Those chairs are amazing.
I found the Land of Nod dollhouse by doing a google search for $130 plus $30 shipping over the summer for my 2 year olds birthday. Same exact dimentions, the roof was just less decorative.
Two years earlier we brought the white Pottery Barn dollhouse/bookcase and with shipping it was over $400. It is more fancy with the spindle ledge, however for the money I saved I was able to buy books and music box and a boom box to help full up the space.
My replica dollhouse looks just as good and has the same "made in China" sticker on its base.
thejando - here's a link to the magnetic tree project:
