Ah, pine. We paint over you on our inexpensive IKEA furnishings. We complain of your eyesore of yellow and knots. But these Apartment Therapy House Tours prove that exposed pine wood can be perfectly beautiful. These homes use pine at its best, taking advantage of the material's warmth and texture.

In some cases, the pine is very old, as in original wide plank flooring. In other cases, the pine is new and used for its solid durability, as in shelving or tabletops. Each of these homes, though, works pine into the decor with great success:

FIRST ROW:
1: Rachel's Weatherboard Cottage
2: Greg's Reflection of Taste
3: Susy and Dale's Cozy Reno Studio
4: Darrell's Quaker Quest
5: Polly & Ben's Sherman Oaks Shangri-La

SECOND ROW:
6: Chuck & Jessica's 196 Square Foot Green Shed
7: Serena's Cozy Santa Cruz Surf Shack
8: Tyke and Jon's Topanga Canyon Casa
