- What I Love About My Small Home:
- My home is everything I love: a fluffy bed, a bathtub, many windows, even more books, and a bar. I tore down two walls to fit everything in. I love coming home and seeing all of my books up on my built in bookcase, my olive green closet doors, all of the natural light pouring in my windows, and a sleek wooden bar inviting me to sit and draw (preferably with a glass of whiskey within arm’s reach). I’m a middle school teacher here in DC, as well as a local artist. I read in bed, create lesson plans in my study nook, and draw botanical prints on my bar. From academics to the arts, every space serves a purpose, and I love every inch of my teeny-tiny home.
- Biggest Challenge of Living in a Small Space
- My biggest challenge is having a pet. Winston, my fat cat, takes up 2 constantly moving square feet of my floor plan. I love him, but find myself rearranging my aesthetics to accommodate his sheer mass. I’m learning to be more flexible while he’s not learning to be more graceful.

Lovely space. The cat area is cute. I've seen a few people put photos next to their cat's bowls. Is that a photo of you?
I should probably make my cats' space more homely. Their bowls are just on the floor next to a wall.
You kitty sure knows how to strike a pose!
Your apartment is wonderful!! It looks so relaxing!
I can't help but wonder where you've hidden Winston's litter box in such a tiny space! My apartment is almost twice as large and I still struggle with where to hide the cat box!
Absolutely lovely home! Ditto for the cat. I love the purple chair and the kitchen is so homey as well.
Love this house...so cute! I love that you got a cat to match your apartment...or did you get the apartment to match the cat? Either way, it looks so cozy and cute.
This is a great space! I love your aesthetic- I totally am redoing my kitties area to make it more homey :)
Super charming, but I mostly felt compelled to vote due to the lovely description (I want to find a place I can love as much as you do yours!) and the cute drawing of the cat in the floorplan. ;)
Kristen, from your essay, you sound as adorable as that fluffy boy of yours. A definite favorite. A middle school teacher in DC, huh? No wonder you like your whiskey!
I love it - very cosy. I love the olive green closet doors.
Forgot to ask - where might I see your art? I'm from Bal-a-more, hon!
What @ABROCK said. I'm moving out in a few weeks to another place that is much, much smaller than my current one (what I meant above is "I hope I can get to love the place I've found as much as you do yours"), and I'm thinking I'll have to have my kitty's litter box in the kitchen --beside her food dish-- because there's no other place. :(
Nice! Do you miss not having a couch? No tv I am assuming?
Aw..... your kitty looks like my Big Billy :-) Great place!
This place made me (a longtime German reader of AT) actually sign up here, just to fav it. Cos I simply had to. I'm not the one who likes everything she sees. But this place is the ace of hearts. I like it completely and utterly.
It shows a lot of thoughtfulness, style, care, and character. A sense for elegance & aesthetics without misunderstood posh pretentiousness. It's classy and livable. Everything has its place and yet there is still enough place for creativity and a free mind (that evolves so much better in a home you love and feel safe than in a wacky, sterile or hipster place, imho).
I actually believe the owner loves her home and is proud of her selections, day by day.
Next to all the things that show a good taste (imho), just one detail that caught my eye:
The way the bed & the pillows on it are arranged made me smile from the inside.Yes, this is how the true "reading in bed" (or "lying in bed & thinking about life in general") looks like. I bet not a lot of people notice that and if, would prefer a "center-styled" and perfectly "groomed" bed topping (at least for the shoot).
The person who lives here shows a personable character. Kristen, I bet you like to take care of choosing well in general. The way you chose to live and the way you write about it (and Winston) makes my heart smile.
You rock! So does your home! :)
You're made of sterner stuff than I am ... I'd have to get rid of 90% of my books to settle for the amount of bookspace you have!
Love the green walls and the counter stools. Where did you get that fabulous purple chair?
From the description I expected many more books, but I love this! So pretty! So charming! And of course I love the kitty. They're rascals, but worth it. Very nice.
I think I spy the kitty litter pan to the right of the toilet? With a liner?
I love your cozy color palette and your bedroom is the coziest! So much style! Love it all~
Totally stunning.
@ABRock and @Tess09. Don't know where hers is but here is where I have found to put my cat's litter box in a small kitchen/small bathroom apartment.
I took the cabinet doors off the sink cabinet in the kitchen so it is open. Just put the doors in the closet for storage because I rent and they can go back on when I move. I made two curtains out of dishtowels that go with my decor and hung them from a small curtain rod inside the sink cabinet. It can be attached as either a tension rod or with small tacks.
If there are issues with the pan (with cover-or you can go without a cover) fitting around plumbing, just cut to fit with a utility knife. The curtain hems (if you use the right dishtowel they come hemmed) can be weighted with a small bit of pull chain. Make a small cut and stuff it in there, helps it hang nicely and stay closed.
It's a bit of work, but then you have what looks like a kind of forty's inspired open sink with curtains that the cat can walk in and out of and use a hidden litter box.
I forgot to add: I love the botanical art. Is it yours?
I love your place......................very dramatic. Your cat is a twin of my cat, ha...............cute!!
Favouriting because your place is great and that hidden litter box/curtained cupboard idea is GENIUS.
I am in love with that purple chair! Do tell where you found it.
I love that you drew your cat into the floor plan!
Sophisticated elegance bundled nicely in a small space! Well done!! Even your cat looks sophisticated!!!!
I love the gray walls- would love to know brand/color. Such a genius selection with a partially gray cat. I bet it hides all the collecting cat hair.
Kristen, your middle-school pupils are very lucky, and I suspect they know it. What is more important than the art of living well?
Nice, but I would need more of a living/lounging area
Haha..The cat wins!
Your floorplan drawing is terrific!
Love your place because it is a one-person sanctuary. Who needs a couch if you have a comfy bed?
And I love your cat (I'm not even a cat person!).
Your artwork is beautiful - do you sell it?
Very nicely put together. Love the cat in the drawing.
this place is a sheer beauty. thank you for sharing! and your cat definitely looks like he knows he rules the roost. I wish we could have gotten a shot of your bathroom; based on the rest of the apartment, I'm sure it's the serene escape you say it is!
This isn't my place, but for everyone asking about the purple damask chair, it's from Pier One. I have two of the same, and got them on sale. The purple fabric is velvet, and has button tufting on the front of the chair. They're also very comfy.
They also had some gorgeous chairs in similar styles - loved the Peacock, but didn't go with my color scheme...
I like the little picture next to the cat's dish... it makes me think of how a cat would decorate his or her kitchen. My dog likes to look out the window while he eats; the idea of a pet enjoying a leisurely meal with artwork like this cracks me up.
Love this place! It's cozy, but charming and seems to function perfectly for you! (And I totally want that purple chair!) ^_^ Yay for furbabies!
I love your place! I live in DC too and I am familiar with the challenges of small spaces (and litter boxes!). I was wondering if you sell your botanical prints. The ones on display in your home are gorgeous and I would love to buy similar ones from a local artist. Do you have a website?
Nice place. Say hello to your cat.
Now that's a cozy looking bedroom. Do you know the names of the grey and olive-green paint colors? They look great together.
Hey everyone! I'm glad that Apartment Therapy highlighted Kristen's apartment! Her fabulous artwork can be found on Etsy, here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDistrictGarden
I have that same purple damask chair. It's from Pier 1. Love this apartment & style!
Love this place! It appears that the litter pan is next to the toilet, but I have 2 friends who have lived in tiny places and they each successfully (and rather painlessly) trained their cats to use the toilet.
WOAH! I am so blown away by the outpouring of comments! My home is my heart and I am so glad that I can share that with you all, even if only at a glimpse.
Although Winston remains unimpressed by this experience, he did purr in approval of your compliments. I actually keep the litter in a side nook in my bathroom, @ABRock @Tess09. I wish that I could have shared additional pictures to show the bathroom, but such is life! It's a smaller litter (despite the larger cat butt situation). It works out and is easy to keep clean. I tried one of those big, fancy litters for like.... a day.... but quickly went back to the traditional box.
As for my cat matching my apartment, @Gigi5555 - total coincidence! I adopted him on a whim after moving in and he's been fashionably camouflaged ever since. His little eating area is made up of a collection of bowls and things that have been a part of my life since childhood. He eats off of the same plate that I used to hide my veggies under as a kid. And yes, @clur, the picture is of me and my friend at a ridiculous party where they offered prom-like pictures. I drunkenly ordered a dozen of them and, in desperation to get rid of them all, added one to Winston's mess hall. It's been there ever since. I haven't heard any complaints, but he does seem abnormally drawn to my glitter ensemble... @grapevine - I love your thought process. :)
@Jess Ruhl24 @Bucklebee The paint in the main living area is called Dorian Gray. I actually went two shades darker in the kitchen and chose Anonymous. The closet doors are done in a high gloss Relentless Olive (all by Sherwin-Williams). I LOVE the colors together! I never knew that grey could feel so warm and inviting.
@FrankiesGirl is completely right - my purple desk chair is from Pier1. I bought it last mother's day so I'd have enough seats in my newly moved into place to host brunch. I carried it on my back at a light jog all the way home just in time to greet my mom at the front of my building. @ProfKD @nov6elizabeth
@ ProfKD, @HHRI, @ Cochrynn, @Sonje - A lot of the art you see in my pictures are my own. I'm a local artist here in DC and have an Etsy shop, too: http://www.etsy.com/shop/TheDistrictGarden. I do botany, anatomy, and zoology drawings in pencil and ink. I'll be updating my shop with many more listings within the next two weeks. Most of the pieces I've done lately have been commissions, so I do take requests. :) If you're in the DC area this spring/summer, come check out the Columbia Heights Community Market Place in Tivoli Square! You'll find me nestled in there somewhere!
@kinski, your comment made my heart smile. I am so touched that you felt connected enough to my entry to write such a thoughtful, soulful response. Your words have really touched me and I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness. Sending my love all the way to you in Germany!
Tonight I'll be raising my nightly glass of whiskey to you, @Sonje! :) You know I'll need it!
Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart.
Kristen
Cute kitty!! I'm voting!
I have looked at the other entries and I do believe yours is one of the smallest spaces...You have done an amazing job with the small space you have and I love your sense of style and personality. Anyone who can love their place without a couch or televison gets my vote! I say you are the winner!!!!
Thanks, @mockther!
(and @tremblingfinger!)
It looks like you placed your tv or computer monitor in the entry way for the photos- where does it normally sit?
Awww...yay for fat gray cats - ha ha! Mine just passed away after 16 years and I miss him every day - despite all his quirks and eccentricities. ;}
Kristin, Amazing job - what style! and the prom pic puts it over the top. You get my vote. Have a whiskey on me! ;}
I justttttt got the TV from my sister as a bday present and have been toying with the idea of a wall mounting. It's slender enough to fit on the narrow white table you see under the botanical prints, @theresaclare, and I can angle it towards my bed or the bar. I've lived without a TV for so long (much to my students' disgust) but am on the verge of being totally cool again once I plug that bad boy in...
TV mounting suggestions, all?
Many thanks to @FRESHKELLY (and a cheers or two as well)!
