Our small galley kitchen in our 1950s brick ranch was in fair shape when we moved in nearly three years ago, but it lacked storage and counter space and needed to be brightened up. The plan was to remodel the whole space by building cabinets where there were none, painting all of the red toned wood cabinets white, adding a subway tile backsplash and granite countertops, all while sticking to a tight budget and doing all the work ourselves.

The remodel ended up taking a little more than a year but nearly everything was changed. We added a tongue and groove plank ceiling, built a cabinet around the refrigerator to give it a custom look, built a new stove hood out of parts from the old hood, built new cabinets for extra storage, added all new lighting, painted all of the cabinets white, installed a subway tile backsplash, new granite countertops and a new farmhouse sink. It was a long and tough process but we finished and did it all on our own, even installation of the granite countertops, for under $3,000.

Now it's a light and bright space with plenty of storage and space to cook. We love it!
