Hi AT:LA,
Our 1959 ranch house has a huge, cement circular fireplace in the living room. Until now we have used pillows for seat cushions. But our 8 month old daughter is crawling, and we'd like to make the base more child friendly with custom foam seat cushions around the entire circumference. Can anyone recommend an upholsterer who will come to our house to measure and then make the cushions? Thanks, Kim
Any good resources/recommendations out there for Kim's charming cement fireplace dilemma? We're just envious Kim has such a stylish way to stay warm during these chilly months here in balmy Los Angeles.

Cushions there may catch on fire. I would leave them off. There is a reason the surround is cement.
I would use flame-retardant fabric and foam. You can find them, it may not be exactly what you're looking for, but it's not going to burn your house down.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone who could custom make this in your area.
Try Sofas and More in Eagle Rock. They're very friendly and helpful and would totally come out and take measurements!
You do have a curb and by the look of things (Lava rocks or sim.) you are burning gas. Fire is therefore not a problem. A wood burning hearth would be dangerous. You are not creating enough heat radiation with this type of fire to transfer combustion. However, to errase any doubt, flame retardent fabrics are made, typically from teflon thread. Colors may be a challenge. I have seen it in white though, which may be suitable. I may know a person who would be interested in your job.

As has already been said, using flame retardent materials is essential, that said, do some research and make sure the treatment used is safe for your new baby as many of the chemicals used can be particularly harmful to young children. Second, I'd recoment doing it in quarters perhaps using velcro to secure it to the base.
I find it so amusing how some posters have to mention unnecesary information about their homes and furnishings before they get the the problem at hand. It's a lovely home, sure, but we didn't need to know it was a 1959 ranch. Thanks anyway.
P.S. I just couldn't hold my tongue any longer. It's not only this poster, it's most of them.
I think it's fair for people to list details about their home in relation to a question. The era/style of a home and its interior is a detail I'd like to know before providing any decor ideas.
Well, OJ I think people mention details because this is a design website and most people are interested in the details and what others do in their apartments or home...Otherwise read a catalog.
I find it impressive that one could not address a specific problem spot within the home without disconnecting that problem from the identity of the overall body of the home. That means they care just as much about the part as they do the whole. To me it seems like a holistic attitude. Without such an attitude, any changes, no matter how insignificant they seem, may disrupt the body of the home, a 1959 ranch.
I have a similar situation in my house - a semi-circular bench - and am looking for the same thing. Gregory, did you ever find someone you liked? Anyone else have other suggestions for this?
Check out www.jackmatllc.com they make custom fireplace hearth seats. Hope this helps!
