AT reader Nicole was recently inspired by the decor at the Standard Hotel in downtown LA...
While staying at the ultra modern Standard Hotel in downtown L.A., I fell in love with the platform bed in my room. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find one like it anywhere. I liked how it was carpeted (though softer carpet would have been nice) and extra wide so you could step or sit onto the platform. Anyone know where I can find something like this?
Hi Nicole,
The platform bed at the Standard is actually just a carpeted riser platform, and surprisingly easy to make (or surprisingly affordable to contract out if you're not handy). In case you do want to do it yourself, here's a tutorial on how to make one.
P.S. Because the tutorial is geared towards home theaters, it includes an additional level; so you can nix the 2nd frame part. Unless you want a two-step platform...
Anyone else have a solution for Nicole?

Sorry to hijack the question here but talk about pet peeves! Why would I want to lay on the floor and look directly at the open toilet through the glass? :)
Regarding the question above - the platform was most likely custom made. You can make on too. I'm sure you could create a platform with wood and install carpet on it. Maybe even carpet only the top with flor tiles.
That toilet's driving me crazy as well...what a weird layout. Yes, I would love to sit on the toilet/shower and put on a show for others in the room.
I believe that is the reflection of the bathroom. I think it's beautiful, for a hotel room!
Wouldn't it be nice to have a platform like this that incorporated storage -- maybe drawers, or room to slide my big artwork underneath. Maybe one long side could be a lift-up carpeted wooden "flap" that could open to reveal storage.
The toilet is seen because the shower is visible to the whole of the room, it's just glass.
yes, i've stayed there many times. not really the kind of room you want to share with a bunch of friends, unless you and your friends are into watching each other shower. if you close the curtain on the opposite side of the shower from the glass you can hide the toilet. well you can make your toilet activity translucent rather then transparent. its no good.
p.s. i loved those platform beds until i got pregnant, then i made my husband sell it, they are so hard to get into and out of!!
i would imagine it's fairly easy to make, as stated above...can't be much more to it other than wood and carpet...
You know what? I think I will make one! Good idea to try and incorporate some kind of "flap" so I could store things in it. Maybe make it a bit taller also. Flor tiles sound like a good idea too. Thanks for the suggestions, they really helped! **Nicole
I've stayed at the Standard twice and both times I loved the idea of the room design, but the gray and yellow just looks kind of dingy to me. Maybe I just don't get it, but it seems "too" cool. Although, I do like the stickers they put on the toilet paper! And the bathroom sinks are quite nice.
The problem with the toilet is that the seat was left UP!!!
I'm a guy, but my mother and sisters taught me better. Leave the seat up and you'll get a headache.
