Gregory Han, Apartment Therapy Los Angeles Managing Editor
Los Angeles, CA
Introducing our second January Jumpstart Judge, Gregory. He'll be helping to award our six eBay prizes to the deserving DIY-ers who braved the possible perils of home projects with us this month on AT. Click below for his DIY secret resource and biggest inspiration...
My Secret Resource: My network of friends online, via IM and LiveJournal, who represent a wide spectrum of skills and experience. So if I have a question about refinishing wood, I'm able to contact someone almost immediately. If I have a question about creating a networked digital media center, I can instant message another person about that. And if I need some ideas about aesthetics, I can always just ask my co-editors from Apartment Therapy LA, since we're all online nerds.
And definitely the always reliable advice from my partner in crime, Emily. She's the one who helps shape my pie in the sky ideas into something feasible. She's also my sounding board for aesthetic choices...if she pauses at a suggestion, I know I need to think of a different solution (usually one of a more affordable nature). It's definitely her supportive nature that gives me the initiative to set forth upon ideas, whether I'm challenging us to survive one month only on products from the 99 Cents Only Store or tackling our own January Jumpstart project.
Biggest DIY Inspiration: Friends Polly and Ben, whom I met by chance while purchasing a bench from them via Craigslist. I later ended up photographing their Sherman Oaks apartment for an AT:LA house tour.
When I saw what Ben was able to create for his hi-fi and son's bedroom, I found myself inspired to tackle my own January Jumpstart with a bit more vim and vigor. Ben has been so kind to offer some advice and guidance, both which I need in large supply as my plans for my stereo cabinet conversion has crossed over from "practical and simple" to "stop...you're scaring me!" My understanding girlfriend just likes to laugh and her favourite response when asked about this project is to say, "He said it was going to end...but then there's always 'just one more thing'".
