200 Words from a Foodie: A Great Find At The Farmer's Market

Kathryn cups #2.JPGThis week our food pal Bill Webb tells us about his secret find at the farmer's market.

Last Sunday I was wearing a sweatshirt at the Farmer’s Market planning for soup and pies. Today the thought of using the stove seems crazy. It is October and it is 100 degrees outside. I had thought I was going to be making a butternut squash soup with ginger and apples. Oh well, what seemed tempting on Sunday will have to wait.

Last Sunday, I was told, was the last day at the market for heirloom tomatoes, berries and nectarines. But with this heat wave, who knows?

Kathryn cups #1.JPGIt is clear though that fall’s bounty will not wait. Masses of apples and squashes and potatoes are willing and ready to be baked, cooked and stewed.

The one thing that is consistent about the market regardless of season or temperature is Kathryn, a fantastic potter who shows here wares every Sunday. Her booth is just west of the center of the market, next to the plant guy and across from the olive guy. Kathryn makes wonderful pottery. She has beautiful glazes and solid shapes. I have bought her work for birthdays, holidays and wedding gifts as well as for my own table. I eat from her bowls and drink from her cups.

There are other good farmer’s markets to visit but this one is the best. The tamales are amazing, the people are beautiful, always free samples of fruit, cheese and juice and Kathryn.

I'm assuming from the description of the booth placement that you are referring to the Hollywood Farmer's Market on Selma Ave between Cahuenga and Vine? And not "The Farmers Market" on 3rd/Fairfax, next to The Grove. Or the West Hollywood Farmer's Market on Melrose Place. Right? Just want some clarification so I can check out the ceramics this weekend. The pieces pictured above look really nice... Thanks!

Damn, you're quick! I was just adding the link to the Ivar market.

Have a great weekend!

I love the glasses! I am going to visit the Hollywood Farmer's Market on Sunday. So difficult to find solid ceramic water glasses.
Thanks for the tip.

i especially like the cups. but i wonder if they're dishwasher- and microwave-safe, which for me is a must whenever i consider dishes/glasses.

Yes, you can put them in the dishwasher. They are very study and duarble. Hmmmmmmm. Don't know about the microwave, I've never done it.
