Southwest #10: Allison's Crayons

fallcolors3.jpgName: Allison P.Bedell
Location: Altadena, CA
Type of Home: 2 bedroom house

What inspired you to use color? I truly believe that color is the spice of life! Just as I wouldn’t dream of eating bland food – I would not want to live in a bland colorless space. Color evokes such emotion in me. I am a happy person and I love happy bright colors. My moods change and inspire me to buy different pieces of artwork, accessories, floor coverings etc. and with each subtle change I feel refreshed and renewed. Color is just plain fun to play with – It makes me feel just as creative now as I did in kindergarten with my big box of Crayola crayons, only now I live in my creations.

Color Tip: My favorite tip that I share with friends is to keep your wall color and main furniture pieces (sofas, chairs, ottomans) in a neutral color palette. That way you can easily change your accessories (pillows, throws, artwork, window treatments) to suit your mood or the season. Coming from the Midwest and now living in California, I miss the change of seasons. Southern California barely has two seasons but I redecorate in a minimal way for Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. I go for cool colors in the Spring/Summer (aqua blues, apple greens, silver). For Fall/Winter I love to use warm oranges and reds for a cozier feel.

Colors Used: None listed.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

I don't usually like orange for decorating, but this really works; it comes off a clean, bright and comfy, with no bad 70's retro feel at all-I love it!

Woke up feeling kind of crabby & blah- seeing this entry immediately brightened my mood. Beautiful use of color and accessories. Very warm and inviting. Love it.

The thing hanging from the rod looks similar to turkish/moroccan hanging lanterns. You can either put a candle inside it or you can rig up a cord/socket/light and make it a lamp.

I'm in the process of making mine into lamp, as in I've goone to the hardware store and bought all the bits needed, and they've been sitting on the 'project' table for 3 months!!!!

I, too, am usually not big on orange but this is fabulous. And I love the coral shade in the bedroom.

I get a very Pier1ish vibe from the decor. (in a good way.)

Why do I suddenly want a Cremesicle? :)

I love that the orange theme continues through the space without being oppressive or boring. You punctuate it nicely with the minty green. I also enjoy how the orange color resonates with the yellow pine floor. Very warm and inviting.

Awww!!! You know I love your house! I can't help but express that every time I come by because it's so warm & inviting. Even before I walk in I admire your yard and your cozy, cute porch. When I enter your house I can't help but smile because the vibrant beautiful colors and accents pieces give me joyful, welcome feeling. You have very creative, unique, beautiful style. I need your creative mind for my future mi casa someday! You deserve to win too!!!
