apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Southwest #11: Mellow Modern Megan

fallcolors4.jpgName: Megan Bedell
Location: Tarzana, CA
Type of Home: 700 sq.ft one bedroom rental

What inspired you to use color? Color has a direct effect on your mood and overall frame of mind, so I try to use the right colors in the right way in order to inspire tranquility where necessary (i.e. my bedroom – a spot for calm renewal) and incite energy in other spaces (i.e. my living and dining areas – places to entertain friends and offer a comfy corner for overnight guests). Beyond paint, vibrant colors from flowers, books, board game boxes, candles, frames, dishes, jewelry, textiles, and even my little guppies, deliver amazing nuances. I love the way all the colors in my little apartment embrace me when I come home after a day of sitting in a gray cubicle and confirm who I am and what I find beautiful.

Color Tip: Choose colors that reinforce what you want that space to be about. For instance, I love bright, bold colors, but (for me) I don’t think they always promote calm, so I wouldn’t smear neon green across my bedroom walls. Rather, I use pops of color in my bedroom and save the super hues for more energetic spaces.

Colors Used: All Dunn Edwards. Island Oasis, English Scone, Silver Spoon, Pink Lily

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

That couch looks comfy. Anybody know where that's from?

Nice and colorful - But I don't see any lighting in her Living Room seating area or Dining Area...

...and the curtains hung as Portieres to her hall are waaaaay too short and hung much too low - I'd hang them at the sliding glass doors and get rid of the sloppy single tab-top panel.

Love the couch, anyone have info on who makes it?

@bepsf: Valid point on the curtain - always meant for it to be higher and hit the ground for extra drama...I'll have to revisit that next paycheck :)
The couch is from a now defunct furniture shop in Echo Park...sorry I don't have details. But yes, it is comfy (the site of many midday naps...)

I like what you did outside... is it paper or fabric or something else?

i agree w/ the curtain. i think it is cute & you have some great pieces, but it doesn't feel cohesive. maybe just edit down a little. i'm not sure.

Megan, how did you convince your landlord to let you paint such a vivid color?

What are we looking at on what appears to be the balcony, in the fifth photo, that matches your tablecloth? Is it cloth, and if so, is it really outdoors, and if so (phew), how does it wear? It's really cool.

I love being able to get feedback on my lil apt :) ...
@Emmm & whytephoenix: That is fabric from Urban Outfitters on the patio. The area is under an awning so (surprisingly) it has survived for a year so far (living in SoCal helps too)
@hanako66: The lounge chair is from the out-of-business place in Echo Park I mentioned earlier. Are you in LA? If so, they do have another location, but I'd have to look it up.
@veggiesho: It's a condo rental situation and the owner is a pretty colorful guy himself...the bedroom used to be a dark green and the bathroom was a deep red, so he encouraged my creativity. It will have to return to neutrals when my lease is up :(...But by then I'll probably be ready for a new color adventure in another space:)

Thanks Megan! I am in the greater LA area...it is fabulous! I hate to put you through any trouble, but if you have the info I would so appreciate it!

@hanako66: No problem, the store is located at 169 North La Brea, LA 90036. The Sunset Blvd location had great deals right before it closed.
@Erika in Seattle: ahh, i'm sorry it didn't photograph well, maybe the reflection of the dark glass stones or the flash. I do have a guppy in there. It's clear in person, but i'll take any tips on making it even clearer.
@Fatal Flower: The lamp is from good ol Target w/ an Urban Outfitters lantern.

i'm digging the bedroom colors, set up, lamp, and pieces. I feel the cohesiveness is lacking, for a small space it should flow just a little more.

@bclynn: Thanx:) My mom actually found the lamp at an antique store in Altadena,CA (T-Queen's). I call it a housewarming gift, she says it was theft. Either way, it's a lovely lamp (esp. at night with the recessed lights off - it throws some great shapes across the walls).

These pictures say one thing but I’m an eye witness of this lovely, tranquil, beautiful apartment! From the moment you walk in my girls style will take over you. Here living room (my favorite part) makes you feel so relaxed…the vibrant beautiful color on her walls, her comfy couch, her unique display of hot pairs of shoes and martini glasses all give off such a cool vibe. Oh and let me not forgot all the pictures of her beautiful friends on the wall; that sets the whole place off! Overall her name perfectly describes her place; it’s mellow, it’s modern, it’s Megan. I’m so proud of you girl, hope you win!!!!!!

What a terrific use of space and color. The aqua wall gives a serene excitement to the living room. Hard to choose a room that I like more than another. Thumbs up.

I'd love to know where you got your bedsheets from...I don't think the white would survive my cats (they like to sleep with me and one still has her nails) but I love the orange color and the pattern!

This truly is a mellow modern space!
I love the color choices--the living room is like a beautiful Tiffany box!--it is almost like you took an actual Tiffany box to the paint store--did you????
I also love the bedroom and that one of a kind bedspread-orange is my favorite color. The morroccan lamp and chaise really set off the bedroom. The outdoor patio space that coordinates with your dining room table cloth is also a great touch.
The draped doorway is probably my favorite--who cares if the drape doesn't go to the floor--it is the overall effect that counts. The trio of Retro mirrors is also a great touch--Bravo!
Megan--you go girl!!!I hope you win!
