Southwest #14: Jayne's Technicolor Playhouse

100808atlabed_wall.jpg

fallcolors1.jpgName: Jayne Blume
Location: Lubbock, Texas
Type of Home: 1954 house

What inspired you to use color? 1940s Technicolor musicals. Punchy pop fabric prints of the late ‘60s. Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Laugh-In. Barbie’s psychedelic years. Poiret fashion plates of the 1910s. Hawaiian muumuus. "Gay Purr-ee," a color-trippy 1962 animated film. View-Master dioramas. Early iMacs. Easy-listening LP album covers. My vintage decorating books from 1948 to the early ‘70s.

Color Tip: Although every object in my playhouse is as color-saturated as possible, I never paint walls with color. I use only pure austere white. Maybe this came from years of living in rental spaces, but I think paint on walls is flat and static. I like my color in 3D, the way bright colors totally jump when surrounded by white space.

Colors Used: Red-orange. Astroturf green. Mango orange-yellow. Tart chartreuse softened with sheer celery. Ripe avocado. Royal blue. Electric deep turquoise. Chocolate-syrup brown. Petal pink. Hot pink. Ambered wood tones. Hospital white.

Fall Colors Introduction -------------------------------

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

Wow! What a groovy pad! I totally dig it! Love all the retro fabrics and colors! Your fridge is fantastic! How did u do that? Is it permanent? I would love to try something like that myself.

I get a sense that the owner of this groovy pad is an excellent seamstress and textile freak!

I think the kitchen is the most successful room. Very good use of color, good judgment in the photos, too.

The first thought that came into my head when I saw the opening shot was, "Ahhhhhh!" But it's a very cool home and looks great. It's always nice to see people with homes that don't look like all the others in blogland.

I couldn't handle the bedroom (but this is a matter of personal taste...if if works for jayne, more power!). I do, however, adore that kitchen. the fridge is awesome.

The fridge decor is made from giant magnetic sheets, like those used for removable car door signs. They cut easily with scissors and take paint well.

I love the entryway, but is it not stretching the rules a little too far to use composite images? All in all, there are 18 photos here where everyone else only has 10.

There are some great design ideas here but I think it's an example of a great idea gone too far. The fabrics are beautiful and the color combinations are good, however, it's taken way too far. I would've loved to seen just a few of the concepts done rather than taking the concept so far to the extreme.

I love your fabrics and bright colors. What a smart choice with your collection of accessories to opt for white walls. Lovely space!

Funky, psychedelic, and definitely you. I think it's a bit over the top for most but it's very cool and interesting. You are a free spirit and it shows. Far out...
